Building a Dagorhir Flail

(there are quite a few images so it may take a while to load.)

Special thanks to Scion d'Ur of the Dagorhir realm of Angaron for this incredible contribution in developing these pages, instructions, and splendid graphics. While this design is not the only one allowed or in use, it is a recognized standard highly recommended for safety and longevity.

NOTE: The graphics below pre-date the rule requiring flails to have an 18" circumference when measured on separate axes. Flails tend to be more sperical and have more impact now.

  • Start with a PVC core at least 18 inches in length. We recommend using a NERF soccer or basketball for the flail head. It will be more durable and have some impact.  Make sure the ball has an 18" circumference measured on all axes.

  • Cover the length of the flail head with a cloth put together like a sword cover, extending a few feet beyond the bottom of the flail head.

  • Tie off the cloth at the bottom of the flail head and cut the remainder into three strips.

  • Braid the three strips of cloth into a "rope" long enough to extend through the PVC core, plus a foot.

  • Run the cloth rope through the PVC core so it leaves 4 or so inches for the "chain" and 8 or so inches run out the bottom of the shaft.  Duct tape the cloth in place at either end, securing it.  * The four inch allotment for the chain is anticipating the material stretching over time.  It should not stretch to more than six inches for a while.
In the case of using fiberglass core, braid down or run the rope down the length of the core and tape securely along the entire length.

  • Pad the flail as follows.  Attach rings of foam around the flail chain down the full length.  Pad around the top of the shaft and a little over it in case someone gets hit with it.  Pad the pommel as with any weapon.

  • Cover the rings around the chain and pommel with duct tape or cloth to protect the foam and cover the shaft with cloth, securing it with tape.
