1  Gear / Buy / Sell / Trade / Re: Armor forsale, lets try this again. on: August 16, 2014, 06:35:20 pm
Come on people, I know SOMEBODY wants the nice shiny armor.
2  Gear / Buy / Sell / Trade / Chain forsale, lets try this again. on: July 13, 2014, 07:45:39 pm
For sale: Two sets of armor.

One set of larp armor. Made for women, would also fit men. Butted stainless steel chain attached to leather chest plate. Good chest protection for Dagorhir or Belegarth. Some damage to one shoulder strap, easily repaired. I don't need it anymore, asking $180, includes shipping, may negotiate.

Look below for more.

Also for sale:
One set of Riveted blackened steel mail. Bought it online, forgot to take into account the room I'd need for a gambeson. My goof is your gain. Asking $200, includes shipping.

Both fit a size 42 chest. The riveted doesn't leave room for padding underneath.
3  Gear / Weapons & Armor / Re: Dog ears? on: June 14, 2014, 08:16:54 pm
Lyradil, if you have a dog ear, or anything you think might be a dog ear, your best bet is going to be to just tack it down with a couple of hand stitches. Just make your life easier.  ;)

Or, you can be lazy like me and get some grey opaque trouser socks from target and use those for covers.
4  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: $20 Garb Challenge 2014: Rules and Entries DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JUNE 1ST on: June 01, 2014, 11:26:30 pm
Name of Entrant: Kaonna McAvoy

Photo:

List of garments included: Tunic, pants, sash, belt, fancy coat

Money spent: $19.50 for comforter cover, multiple curtains, table runner, thread.

Topic: How to be fancy for $20 or less

Step 1: Hunt for fabric! This is a dangerous mission and can cause intense disorientation. Do not get lost. Take a compass. Or leave breadcrumbs.

Your main goal is to find pieces that work well together and seperately. The more modular your outfit the better off you'll be. Different pieces can work solo or together, or, with possible future pieces! A great place to look- the linens section at the thrift store. I found all of this in different Goodwills and thrift stores. It takes a bit of searching, but it is totally do-able.

Step 2: Make the things!

You've found your supplies! Good for you! Now make something to cover your butt! I personally chose to do this with pants, because I don't do skirts well. These are the pants, as seen in Ilsa's tutorial(http://dagorhir.com/index.php/getting-started/tutorials/category/5-garb-tutorials-basic-pants-with-gusset), made from the cotton stripey curtain.

Step 3: Make more things!

Cover your boobs! (Or other chest like things) With a tunic! This is a Bocksten, as seen in Alric's tutorial(http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php?topic=5902.0;wap2). Made of a purple comforter cover, it is super soft and comfy. Plus its huge and leaves fabric for......

A belt! Or rather a sash. Something. It holds your stuff in place.

Step 4: Make a super fancy coat!

Take the fanciest fabric you found and be lazy at it.
Fold like so.

Then like so.

(Snarky roommate not required, but is useful)

Then stitch the top at a slight angle unless you have the shoulders of a mine craft character. Pin and sew for fine tune fitting, then wear it and be cool.

(to cool to look at the camera)

Step 5: Cover your nakedness and shame with all your nice new clothes! Try out the different combos

^^^Random length of fancy fabric that makes the whole outfit look SUUUUPER snazzy!^^^

and enjoy!

Finally

Go among the Dagorhirrim with your head held high and talk to people and beat them with sticks.

Things learned:

F*** the french, and their seams.
Pleats are the devil, that's why they look so good.
My roommate is made of snark, but is helpful.

This guy used to do the in between pretty well. He had pointed ears with clippings of his actual hair blended on them and a tail, and he always has the white orb on his person at events. (Ignore the sunglasses. That isn't the part you should be imitating for the kitsune look)

Alright Trae, for now I'm going to recommend a historical fiction series that I think you might enjoy. I wont say its the most accurate thing on the market, but its pretty close for fiction and it should get you started. I'll give you the titles of more research type material when I get home this weekend. I can't remember them off the top of my head.

The series is called The Strongbow Saga, and its by Judson Roberts. Your local library should have it near the young adults section I think.

Just......:sigh:

Traegis, do you enjoy reading? I have some books I'd like to recommend to you, but I don't want to waste the time if you aren't interested.
9  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: Help: Fur Cloak (sheep skin) and footware on: February 14, 2014, 08:45:21 am
As far as the sheepskin, I'd recommend a couple of penannular (I know I killed the spelling of that) brooches. They're the circles with the spike in the middle of them. Put one on each shoulder and have it hang down your back from there. Simple and effective.
If you want to get really fancy you can attach the sheepskin to a circle cloak and have that cloak close at the neck.

Let me talk to some people and I'll see what I can do. I should have an answer for you in a day or so, but hopefully you'll get lucky and find someone able to snatch it up before then.  ;)

Hounds of War is a new unit currently situated in Columbus Ohio. Based in Ireland during the Viking invasions with heavy fantasy influence, our goal is to create a group of well disciplined and effective warriors on and off the battle field. We're set up as a private army organization with an achievement based ranking system, and non-combatant inclusions.

Pictures:

First picture : A green plaid rough tunic, no sleeves, 'frayed' arm holes with a linen neck facing, tan britches, brown stretchy belt.

Second picture: Awesome cloak coat thing.

Grand total: $16

How I did it:  I made some awesome thrift store scores. All the materials here, were found at the thrift store. The tan britches were found in the plus size women's section, and they are wide enough in the butt to give room in the crotch for stretching and lunging, but tight enough in the waste to stay up pretty much all by themselves. I have a thinner belt under the tunic for 'just in case' slippage though. The green plaid tunic is made from a size 12 skirt found again in the women's department of the good will. I took the waistband off of it, sewed it across the top to give me a sack, then tried and half way succeeded in following the neckline facing tutorial on the boards how to section. Tore the stitching part way down from my new tunics shoulder seam to create arm holes, then added small stitches at the top and bottom to keep it from opening further. The brown belt I had already.  The cloak coat came as is and I squeed like a little girl when I found it.

Final materials break down

Tunic/skirt: $4
Britches: $4
Belt:$0
Cloak/coat:$6
Thread/needlepack/bandaids:$2

(Please ignore the hotel bathroom picture, I got most of this stuff while staying out of town)
30  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: Viking garb. on: May 05, 2013, 09:19:55 am
I agree with MacDimm about the belt, but personally I dig the hat. I'm no historian so I'm not sure how accurate it is, but I like the look to it.

Speaking from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I think you need a shorter sleeved over tunic with trim to go over your (I think its blue?) tunic that you have now. You also need something to go around your neck, be it a square cloak or a fur mantle or jewelry. You've got to much soft pink exposed without a beard to cover it.

You've got a great base here, I look forward to seeing what you do to personalize it  :D

Plastic buttons aren't, and lacing/belting fits in to the 'medieval fantasy' stereotype more easily than buttons. When reconfiguring something modern its usually better to try and get closer to the stereotype so its not as eye catching.

That being said, I think it'd be fine if you took the wrap around belt off it.  Just make sure he puts some real garb on underneath it.

Its a problem in the college age community, which is where most of Dagorhir is. Someone being in Dag isn't more likely than anyone else in their early 20's to have an STI. This is just an effort to get more people that you may be friends with checked, who may not have the resources in their home towns.

ETA: If your out of your early 20's, you should still probably get checked once a year. Just in case I made anyone think they somehow dodged the bullet by being older.

Given the option of buying food at a reasonable price on site, rather than filling half my truck with food/driving forty minutes away to stock up, I promise I'd spend at least 50 bucks at the farmers market.

You might do a beaded leather string skirt over a shorter linen short/skirt combo. It'd take some finangling, but it should give you the right kind of look while still being durable.

47  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: ~critique my garb~ on: March 31, 2013, 09:59:51 am
Make some sort of tattered cowl/collar to cover the humanness of your neck, its a startling contrast between your mask and your tunic. If it were me, I'd make  some linen patches to put on the inside of your brown tunic and have dangly strips coming out where your human skin peeks now, especially on your elbows. Layered pieces of scrap fabric sewn together and then sewn onto either the inside or outside of your tunics shoulders will help give you a broader 'stuffed' look and help make you look less human.   You might also consider painting your hands so your finger tips don't stand out so much in your hand coverings, or wearing a second pair underneath to cover them.

Over all this is a very good look you have going here. I'm excited to see what else you do with it.  ;D

From what I remember most fighters set up a 'base camp' pretty far from sections of the field we use for the main battles. Maybe Designating a base zone that's closer to the action, but still out of the way would help? Or a big shade tent set up that has a water wagon everyone can visit and sit at between fights.
