I'm planning on attending, and have room for 4 more in my truck. I'll see if we can get the Hgih Spires there in force. Ballad Street was LOTS of fun. I fought until my legs cramped up so badly I could barely walk. Greyglade does some really innovative battle scenarios.

Lost: 1 tan 52" 25-30 lb bow, right handed only with brand new string. Pretty generic, but it had a play-it-again sports price tag on it. I would appreciate its return to any Dark Angel. Thx.

Events / Ragnarok / Emergency contact number for troll

Is there a phone number that people can use to contact troll? This would be helpful for both people on site that have an emergency and for people outside the event who need to contact someone onsite. A prepaid cell phone would be great for this.
Many of us have children stayng with relatives for the week and it would be nice to know that I don't have to check my cell phone every couple of hours.

I think that it is a GREAT idea! I've been experimenting with arrowhead design for quite a while and I've been using some new materials in building my arrows for Rag. I'd be happy to share my insights into the topic and I'll even demonstrate how to make my arrowhead v3.4 if anyone is interested.

Is it possible to arrange for a proxy to stand in for a camp master if they cannot be there when land grab opens? The proxy should be designated in advance and Darstab should, of course, be informed as to whom the proxy will be.

Events / Ragnarok / Rag Tag advice
|
on: June 08, 2009, 08:58:27 am

|
Wear them at all times. Bring something to hang them on that will survive the rigors of combat and remember your tag number. Most of the scheduled events and many campsites require you to show your tag to participate or enter. Think of your tag as your passport to fun and guard it as though it is your immortal soul. I would counsel campmasters to keep a list of everyone in your camp, their emergency contact info, and their rag tag number. If you find a lost tag, hand it to a herald on the field or take it to Troll if off the field. If you go swimming and don't want to risk losing your tag, put it in a backpack/pouch/shoe. Let's try to keep the headaches to a minimum for the nice people running Troll.

Thank you, Laithe. I will make the effort to drag my carcass out to archery check to help out this year.
For anyone who doesn't know Laithe, he has been a consistent innovator in running weapons check for large events including past Ragnaroks. His efforts have been a great contribution to raising the safety standards for years.

General / Rules rules rules / Re: Archery calls
|
on: June 07, 2009, 10:08:15 am
|

*Sigh* Throughout this whole thread, I only saw the issue of safety brought up once (thank you Stylgar). When a fighter blows off a melee weapon strike, there is always the option of hitting them harder. This is not an option for a conscientious archer who doesn't want to full draw a cheater in the face from 10 feet to get them to take their hits. Archers are human too, and the temptation exists to draw the arrow back a bit farther, aim for sensitive spots, etc. when someone shrugs off arrow shots. Allowing archers to call their shots provides a mechanism to mitigate this impulse. Having arched for almost as long as GvK, I have admittedly made my fair share of bad calls, but I have caused far fewer injuries as a result. I arch from the front lines, so most of my shots are made from half draw or less and most of these shots end up being barely more than a tap to the target.
This being said, as long as a fighter takes something when they are hit by my arrow, I won't call the shot. The majority of my calls are made when a fighter looks to me for clarification. Therule is in place as much for safety reasons as anything.

The garb requirements pertain to anyone who has fought with us before. We are not going to turn away potential new members because they don't have garb, and I will see if I have any loaner garb I can bring.
On to other topics:
Weather: The lying yankee weatherman said that we are supposed to have temps in the mid 80's and partly cloudy. It should be perfect fighting weather.
Feast: The menu includes beef, chicken, and shrimp kabobs over rice with gravy. Fresh fruit and veggies will be available throughout the day along with gatorade and water. We will also have ice on hand to help y'all cool off. If you are driving a long distance, the feast will be worth it!

I'll be happy to sit in on the meeting and act as a consultant. As far as the grunt work goes, well, I kinda want to just be able to enjoy Rag this year and do my volunteer work at archery check. Is that cool?

Sin Nite was the brainchild of Nurgle the Unclean a few months before Rag XIV and I was the facilitator since I had the connections. And yes, there was a Sin Nite at XV.
My suggestion would be to start a new tradition at Rag rather than using Sin Nite. There are too many negative connotations and high expectations associated with the name.

It'd be a big help to know the cutoff date well in advance. That way we know when to really start pressuring people to get them in. Also, are prereges transferrable?

General / Dagorhir Discussion and Announcements / Sins and Slaves

The traditional time period is 24hrs of service, although some slaves have been known to give more.
As a quick suggestion, the Slave Auction used to be separate from Sin Nite. Let's separate them again. Nobody really wants to do their servitude on Sin Nite and there would be more people willing to act the part of slaves on, say, Thursday.

General / Dagorhir Discussion and Announcements / What's Yer Dream Battle?

I actually like GvK's idea for a naval battle with the exception of the archers. I'd put the archers in skiffs that could not close in closer than 20' from the "ships". That would keep it safe, mobile, and allow for arrow recovery much more easily.
We actually did some naval battles at a one day event in The High Spires earlier this year with large (30') pvc boats. The boat movement was unwieldy and required 6 people to move the boats, but once the maneuvering stage was over the ship to ship fighting was a blast. Just some food for thought.

I always wanted to do a weekend long scenario that consisted of small parties crossing through a wooded area, included some dungeon diving, treasure hunting, and nighttime monster raids. The parties would actually have to carry their food and equipment with them and sleep in their cloaks under the stars. It might be kind of hard to implement though.

General / Dagorhir Discussion and Announcements / heard something rather upsetting
|
on: November 06, 2007, 07:56:00 pm
|

While I would be delighted to see Rag moved further west and (ahem) south, I believe that the current restrictions were put in place to make it convenient for the most densely populated (in Dagorhir terms) realms to drive to. When this was enacted there were only 2 or 3 realms west of the Mississippi. This has changed, but the bulk of the Dagorhir population still resides in the eastern half of the country.
Here is something to consider: Moving Rag closer to any border of the US extends the drive time for most of the Dagorhirians going to Rag. Moving Rag west of the Mississippi does the same thing (sorry Dominion, but I think our numbers would suffer significantly if held in your backyard). I think that the East Coast realms would probably be willing to bite on driving an extra hour or two, but it would add several hours for the bulk of the realms and discourage attendance.
I like the idea of moving it to Northern Kentucky or somewhere between Columbus and Cincinatti.

Kirin's stack of recently and currently read books:
Heroes Die and also Blade of Tyshalle, by Matthew Woodring Stover. Highly recommended, I find something new every time I reread them.
The Black Company books of the North, by Glen Cook (the first 3 books in the series). Brain candy for tough guys.
The Gap Cycle by Steven R. Donaldson. Crack in the form of the written word. Tom Covennant is great also.
The new Dragonlance novel by Weis and Hickman was pretty good, they are always a cut above any of the other authors in the Dragonlance series.
That's about it for now; oops I just realized I'm almost due for my bi-yearly reading of LOTR. Gotta keep the benchmark fresh...
