251  General / Dagorhir Discussion and Announcements / Re: What have you given back? on: April 07, 2011, 10:37:37 am
When I lived in Michigan, I helped some of the young local kids learn how to sew so that they could make decent garb and weapon covers.

In Maryland, I make sure my fighters have water and snacks when they come off the field. If it's cold, I make sure they have blankets and cold weather gear. I've also started giving sewing lessons to a couple of my fighters.

At events, I help Juuls feed everyone and clean up camp.

I am currently working on an article or two for the next issue of Incidental Padding.

At Rag XXVI, I am teaching a class for Rag University, judging the Dagorhir Fashion Show, helping with henna and dancing at the Hafla, volunteering for whatever is needed for the Arts and Sciences competition, in addition to normal stuff around camp.  I have also volunteered to make headbands and herald tabards for the day battles.

It is also my job to make sure people look good on and off the field with BadAss Garb!

If you're still in need, I'd love to judge!

I'm also willing to help set-up, and may be able to donate a prize.  Just let me know what you need!
253  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: Selling Handmade Garb Quality Beanies and Stocking Hats on: April 06, 2011, 11:38:15 am
If you're looking for inexpensive wool yarn, check out www.knitpicks.com. They have tons of colors and it's great quality.  Even with shipping, you'll still pay far less than any local stores, and you'll have it within about 2 days of ordering.  They have really nice cotton yarn, too.
254  Events / Ragnarok / Re: Dagorhir Fashion Show on: March 31, 2011, 11:45:52 pm
Scheiny,

Do you still need a 3rd judge? If so, I'd be interested in helping! :)
255  General / Roleplaying / Dirt is Old, Blackhawk's Older! on: March 31, 2011, 10:04:46 pm
In honor of Blackhawk's birthday, I propose a contest.  Who can hurl the best "Blackhawk's old" insult?!

Happy Birthday!! You're not getting older, you're just a little closer to death!

256  Events / Ragnarok / Re: Driving to Rag on: March 25, 2011, 12:28:18 am

i think smaller U-Hauls are $20 per day?

That's true, but it's the mileage that costs so much.  I've rented a couple in the last few months and the "local" U-Hauls that are $20/day don't include any mileage (and it starts at $.59/mile). Doesn't add up to much when you are making short trips, but a 3-4 hour drive can really add up.  And you run into a bunch of issues with rentals like insurance, fees for each additional driver, and the renter/drivers have to be older than 24.

However, U-Haul may have an option. Else, I don't know if you know anyone going who has a trailer hitch that they aren't using, but if so, you could ask them if you could borrow it to haul a trailer. Renting a trailer *is* pretty inexpensive (I think Juuls said they get theirs for $14/day).
257  Events / Ragnarok / Re: Driving to Rag on: March 23, 2011, 11:14:36 am
You really don't want to rent a van for the week- it's way too expensive. I would tell them to look for another way to get there.

And if you think you're still going to have trouble fitting all the stuff you and Dracon need for the week, maybe start saving some money and get a roof rack installed.  Then you can get either a luggage pod or a soft sided roof carrier, and it'll still save you money over renting a van.  BH and I have to get a trailer hitch installed on one of our cars if we want to make it in one car this year.

On a side note, look into the travel space bags. They don't require a vacuum hose and a couple of them should fit all of your garb and bedding.
258  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: I keep bugging you people! but you are helpful! (Gambeson) on: March 21, 2011, 10:24:59 am
I'm working with Magnus to make him a custom gambeson as we speak,  and have had several other requests.  Get ahold of me on Facebook or through Blackhawk and we can talk about what you're looking for.

Didn't realize it was so difficult to find my name. :(  Sorry!  A search for Kristy Trudeau should bring me up. If that doesn't work, Blackhawk can give you my e-mail address.

264  Events / Event-Related Announcements / Re: The tour de Dagorhir on: February 25, 2011, 12:35:00 pm
I want to say straight up this is unfair for people who won't have multiple events in their area every month. Cheaters.

I think this issue can be resolved by the points system BH mentioned in his first post.  If points are applied for number of miles traveled AND number of events attended, we can weigh the value of out-of-realm events so that they are worth more than inter-realm events. We don't want to discourage people from attending their own realm's events, but the point of this competition is to encourage traveling to other realms and their events.

There are going to be a lot of loopholes, but in an attempt to make it as fair as possible, I do agree mileage should count if you visit another realm's practice. However, it shouldn't count if you live in another realm, but are technically a member of the realm/unit you are visiting.
265  Events / Event-Related Announcements / Re: Let's go to Ides! on: February 23, 2011, 11:54:23 am
Ides is coming up pretty fast and I'm trying to get a preliminary head count of who will be meeting at the DD to caravan down.  If you plan on meeting up with us, or know of someone who is, please give me a head's up!
266  General / Dagorhir Discussion and Announcements / Re: What do YOU do, as a non-com? on: February 22, 2011, 09:42:11 pm
I usually make sure my unit is watered, and then take lots of pictures.

I sometimes have a problem remembering to take projects to work on, so I've started leaving a project bag or basket in the car (actually, I try to leave a project bag in both cars, just to be safe).  It's usually something that I don't need to get done right away, so I reserve working on it only at events.

It's also a great time to talk to people about future project ideas, or to ask any questions, talk about any problems, or show off something you are working on at home. Helps you meet people and passes the time really well.
267  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: surcoats, to trim the slits? on: February 17, 2011, 06:37:20 pm
Milo,

I'm not sure what your surcoat looks like, but this is something similar that I made for Blackhawk. Originally it only had trim around the neck and arms, but we decided that it was too plain so we added the trim around the slits. He wears it primarily for feasts, but fights in it occasionally.  I guess it really depends on if you want it to be dressy or not.  Maybe try a trim that is narrow and not too flashy so that it doesn't overwhelm anyone looking at it?

268  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: Anyone have a spare JoAnn's e-mail coupon they're not using? on: January 24, 2011, 12:48:14 am
I'm afraid I don't, but if you go to JoAnn.com you can sign up for mobile coupons through your phone.  For smartphones, they have a free app you can download that gives you new coupons every couple of days. If you don't have a smartphone, you can get coupon codes texted to you.  The cashier just types in your coupon codes, and you're all set! And they're available as soon as you download the app/sign up for the texts.  You do have to sign up for the e-mail mailing list for it, but it doesn't take very long and then you'll get even more coupons.

Let me be clear:
If you come to me with something that does not follow our current rule set.
I will:
Use the triad to determine it's efficacy
Hit test it.
pass/fail it
demonstrate it's passing or failing on a wiling subject.
I have no interest in rewriting the rules. I just want to see them followed!
I like simple!!!

272  Fighting / General Fighting Discussion / Re: Frequency of Grappling on: October 21, 2010, 10:50:58 pm
I <3 grappling. As BH will attest, "Somebody come kill this motherf***er" is one of my frequent shouts. If I'm spearing or single blue, grappling is a regular go-to in my repertoire.

I will admit though, if I'm going S&B grappling very rarely comes into play.
Watching Rap wrap up some fool throw him to the ground, roll him over screaming "somebody kill this mother****er" is at treat everyone should see on the battlefield.

So sad that I'm going to miss this!!! :(  I was looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend!!!

But, the trade-off is moving to Virginia so that I'm closer to everyone and don't have to miss any more events, so I guess it's worth it!  ;D
275  Gear / Garb & Equipment / Re: tunic prices on: August 13, 2010, 07:48:08 pm
Linen for a tunic will cost you a minimum of $15 if you buy it on sale or online.  I don't know if you want to get paid for your time or not, but I don't think that you can realistically make a tunic to sell for $5-10, unless you buy your fabric at resale shops or on sale. $15, maybe.  (Don't forget, when you calculate how much to charge for something, it's not just fabric, it's also your thread (minimal cost) and you should figure in a little wear and tear on your machine. )
276  Events / Ragnarok / Re: Suggestions for next year on: June 27, 2010, 01:30:41 pm
plenty of hot water at 4am

why don't you tell everyone why you know this?

I'm sure it's just a lucky guess... *whistles innocently*  Oh wait! I mean, why wouldn't there be hot water at 4am?

Eh. I wouldn't want your money anyway, silly Demon.  You are far more useful to me in SOOOOO many other ways.

Like teaching us your smooth dancing skills...

An inspiration to everyone

I have yet to see these smooth dancing skills...

I was thinking something more along the lines of taking over the world...  I need someone with mad fighting skills to help me.  Are YOU up to the task?

Unless you really do have smooth dancing skills, in which case, all world domination plans take the backseat...

I have a whiskey jug... if you kill BH with it i will lend it to you

Thanks DB, but I if I KILL him, he's of no use to me.  I just need him to pass out for a while until I can get him back to my tent.  I might consider it AFTERWARDS though...
283  Events / Ragnarok / Re: RAG!!!! on: June 10, 2010, 07:25:10 pm
Blackhawk, I will show you what a girl can REALLY do. On the field and off.  You will be looking up at me from the flat of YOUR back, with your eyes rolling in the back of your head. I really hope for your sake that you've been taking your B-vitamins, old man... ;)
Now THAT sounds like a duel i can sink my fangs into!!

And I expect you to.. Over and over and over again... Or I will be VERY disappointed and disgusted with your choices!

I LOVE DAGORHIR!!
How you doing?

Is this really a fight you're talking about?

Depends on what you mean by "fight." If by "fight" you mean am I planning on beating him over the head with his infamous whiskey bottle and dragging him off to my tent, then yes, we are talking about a fight.  A fight that BH has absolutely no chance of winning.  :D
