I think I heard it once from a fellow who was playing a character with a common canon name that his character went something like this: His father/mother lived in a world where the canon character lived and adventured. Being like many other parents, they named their child after the hero in hopes that the name had some special "hero magic" behind it. His character now begrudgingly lives to that name and often feels anger toward the hero since he is nothing like the canon hero.

Just make sure that if the greaves go around back, they come up around the heel cause a guy in our unit had them wrap around and now he has big blisters on his heel from rubbing against the bottom part of them every time he lifted his foot. Please don't make this grievous error.

When the shield user has their shield tilted upward towards their face, it really makes my job as a spearman much more difficult because nearly every shot glances directly toward the face. If I see it, I usually try to hit the person 3 people down from the side who isn't looking so I don't have to risk hitting the guy in front of me in the face. It kind of ticks off the shieldmen who are protecting me since they want me to hit the guy in front of me cause they are also squaring off with him and I'm getting in their way by extending my spear across them to hit the guy 3 people down in the line.

I really really loved the woods battle this year. Probably because I got to clear the river using my spear as a polevault, but nonetheless, it was just the best fighting I had all week long. I felt some of the scenarios just took a little too long to set up so we didn't get in as much fighting as we could have. I really liked the castle, but unless you were in the kill pocket or an archer, it got a little dull sitting around. I agree with Serraphym. Closer res points would be really nice since we want folks to be fighting more, not running back and forth. Other than the scenarios just being a little complex and lengthy to set up, I really loved the fighting all around and had a blast.

Just 24 hours left until great times swapping stories around the campfire and fighting until dawn! I've been swinging around blues all day at chairs and trees just 'cause I can't stand the feeling of not having a sword in my hand this close to Rag.

I can't wait. I've been having Rag dreams every night for 4 or 5 nights straight. Most of them I wake up in a cold sweat because I dream that I slept through Rag and missed all the excellent partying and fighting. I want to knock somebody over with my spear at Rag. That is my goal.

My favorite moment was the last night of the night fighting in the flood lights. I walk up to the line and start spearing away. Another fighter walks up to the line with his shield and sword and takes a pose that I usually associate with arm hunting. The fighter (who was wearing yellow I think and had a small green shield) was holding his sword out extended towards the enemy. I used my spear to knock his sword right out of his hands. I couldn't stop laughing. I felt good about it because when he walked to the line our line backed up a little bit so I assumed he was a very good fighter. From what I saw later of him fighting, he was. Somebody later told me that the shieldman was Magnus of Taurendor I think but I cannot be sure.
Either way, it was a great Ragnarok for me and much more enjoyable that last year's rain fest. I loved the late night fighting and twister with Narnia.

I don't find anything particularly cheesy weapon wise. I get a little ticked at some very flexible swords, but its nothing much. I just hope their cores can hold up to that amount of flex.
I'm a bit guilty with this however with some of my blues so I can't hold much of a grudge.

Kinda not related but somewhat: An archer without arrows is still dangerous. I remember at Rag fighting in one of the bridge battles an archer would pop up to the front line, pull back the string without an arrow in it. This would cause a bunch of the opposite shieldmen to duck simultaneously and become distracted from blocking spear shots or open themselves to a shield charge.
At first I thought it was really funny watching the shieldmen duck at the same time and that archer was just doing it for the giggles. But then I realized it was a valid tactic that the archer was using because they were lacking arrows.

When you finally cut out a shield strap, notice that it fits, bolt it in place and then find out that it does not fit at all. Rage, etc.

Gear / Weapons & Armor / Counterweighting a Glaive

Hey Dagorhirrm, I just finished my glaive (built according to GvK's 2007 design to the exact specs). I love the way it looks, but how it feels is a little odd. Since the blue(foam)prints don't call for counterweighting, I was wondering if any other foamsmithers counterweight their glaives. Experiences of using both counterweighted and uncounterweighted glaives would be especially helpful. Searches for counterweighting glaives didn't show up anything special either =/ Roggan

Looks much better than my first attempts! Also, what are the dimensions of those swords? The second pic makes the top look really thin but that could be my eyes.
Awesome swords!

I get made fun of by my crew in WoW as well for playing Dag... Confuses me, actually.
I think the main thing that shows you've been playing Dagorhir too long is when you look at any pile of junk, either in a messy basement, or on the street corner, and your mind instantly goes into scavenge mode, thinking "would any of this be useful for Dagorhir?"
I was playing wow when I saw the wreckreation nation episode about dagorhir, and exclaimed to my friends "OMG MUST JOIN"
You still have to go into how you managed to e-stalk the Guard...>_> Anyways, you know you've been playing Dagorhir for too long when you have a dream about Rag and you somehow managed to sleep through Sunday and Monday only to wake up on Tuesday to find that out of the expected 1500 people, only 300 showed up because you slept through really big rain storms. I cried in the dream when I discovered the unfortunate news that Tuesday morning.

General / Dagorhir Discussion and Announcements / Latin! And flags on the inside.
|
on: February 12, 2009, 05:52:15 pm
|

This is probably more in tune with those Dagorhirrim who are history fans (or just plain like Latin). Today in Latin class we were reading Caesar's De bello Gallico and this passage came up in one of the books (I'm too lazy to add in the macrons):
Nostri tamen, quod neque ordines servare neque firmiter insistere neque signa subsequi poterant, atque alius alia ex nave, quibuscumque signis occurrerat, se aggregabat, magnopere perturbabantur...etc etc.
I'll translate the Latin later if there is interest, but the gist of the passage is that the Romans, when they were invading Britain, couldn't hold the ranks nor stand firmly (in the water since they are on ships) nor follow the signals and thus there was a bunch of confusion. So this got me thinking a bit about how the Romans managed to communicate between ships (before the age of radios and other things)? Heck, I don't think yelling Latin imperatives across the water is very effective either. So I suppose they must have communicated difficult maneuvers with flag signals (since that is what the passage implies) of some sort. If the Romans are doing it and it normally works, it must be effective to some degree.
So, has anybody in Dagorhir ever tried communication with flags? Could it possible translate to something instead of yelling across the battle field? Although I'm sure it won't become a often used tactic here in our game because everybody wants to fight. Also, discussion of ancient Roman tactic secrets are totally cool too (naval or land). Loquimini et legite! -Roggan

personnaly i dont. because ive been waiting since badon to go to rag, and itll suck for that to be ruined by some teens who cant grow up and ruin it for everyone else
Same here. I went to Rag last year with a legal guardian who wasn't my parent but I had all the forums signed and kept out of trouble. Being a 16 year old knocked off most of the crazy parties from access but I'm not really one for those kind of activities. I plan on going to Rag again this summer because it was such a blast last year and I would hate to have gone when I was 16 and been perfectly safe, then get rejected being 17. Although, even if I wasn't allowed to fight or attend parties, I'd still go for photography and the general atmosphere.

Aratari allowed me to fight when I was 15 but I definitely see why it is recommended waiting for that age to fight in a full battle. However practices are open to most ages here.
