Gear / Weapons & Armor / A New Shield.
|
on: February 23, 2013, 11:28:35 pm
|
Im making a new shield. And its going to be 3lb foam. I want to have a back strap and arm straps as well as a handle for punch shield. But since it is all foam and no solid core, i am going through ways to secure the straps. The only thing i can think of is taking the straps out through the foam and back through again. Anyone have any advice?

I know some people usually set up a small Trading Post near where the merchants set up every year. So i had an idea and wanted to test the waters with it now before i put the time into it.
I can make a Teriyaki Sauce and a Red Pepper Oil from scratch. And I was considering making some and bringing it to Gates to trade. The Teriyaki Sause takes some time to make so Im trying to find out if its worth it or not.
I am ServSafe Certified so the process and the sauce will be made safely and correctly.
Thanks for input everyone.

Frost brought up a good idea. Instead of a whole ping pong ball. Buy a Nerf football and find out what they use to make it whistle. I think i saw one with a small cylindrical plastic piece on it. Basically looks like a dog whistle shape. Make your own exactly like that and glue it onto the arrow shaft near the nock. Its not that big so it shouldnt be a safety issue and it will still whistle like you want it to. And its smaller than a pink pong ball so it wont look weird, you will barely be able to see it unless you are looking for it.

ok. first off i have both ears pierced at the lobes just once each. and i wish i could put pictures up but i cant right now. but i have 9 tattoos. 1. A Fire and Ice Yin Yang on my right arm. 2. Some tribal junk on my left arm. From my elbow to my wrist. 3. A tribal dragon on my back left shoulder blade. 4. A tribal phoenix on my back right shoulder blade. 5. My brothers name MATTHEW written down my right forearm. 6. A celtic sun on my chest above left nipple. 7. Japanese character for 'Younger Brother' on my chest above right nipple. 8. A star on the underside of my right wrist. 9. A black four leaf clover on top of my hand between my thumb and pointer finger.
If anyone wants to see any of them feel free to stop by Urk Kuldar camp at Rag and ask for Izad. I like showing off tattoos.
UPDATE. Actually i didnt look to far into the thread. Most of my tattoos can be seen on page 2. But i have gotten a couple more since i posted those.

I confess. we had a welcome back/seasonal opener and i legged every single new person that was there to try it out in an open melee. and i left them there legged.
i hate people that say they will follow you into a line and then when you get slaughtered they are still standing around.
i hate new people that come out and try to do fancy crap with 2 swords cause they saw Jet Li do it in a movie once.
I hit someone in the back as hard as i could with my flail because he was running the entire outside circumference of the practice field to get a back hack on someone.
I shield checked someone to the ground twice because they picke up my personal weapons without asking.
i hate people that insist on keeping their peanut butter in the refridgerator. it just hardens up and rips your bread apart. come on. put it in the cupboard where it belongs.

For real? It sucks about the ash borer spreading so badly, but one little bright side to it is that it'll make getting firewood to Rag a good bit easier. Huh. I wonder if the Cooper's have any thoughts about this.
I know some campgrounds dont want outside firewood brought in because they want you to pay them more money for thier own wood. But I called Cooper's myself and asked about it. They said yes, you can bring your own firewood. And the nice happy lady i talked to double checked with another nice happy lady. Hope this helped.

Izad- As far as I am aware, all one's parent has to do is be there to sign them in or send them there with a notarized waiver. I do not believe they need to stay and camp as well. Ok. I was aware of the notarized waiver but i wasnt sure if that rule from Ragnarok was following to Badon this year. Im 30 years old so i never had to worry about it. But i have a couple minors in my chapter that need to worry about that. And im trying to get them ready and going. Thanks for the info.

What can non-Fighting parents do? According to the rules, a parent must be on-site at all times for the sake of responsibility. While I'm fighting, what can my parent do besides take pictures and watch the fight? I have a question on this. Do the parents of minors have to camp at Badon too? For them to be able to attend? I thought that was only for Ragnarok this year because it was the campgrounds rule.

Got about 3 or 4 people while waiting for backup. This was the most fun Ive had at a day battle in a long time. Thanks Angaron and Sparta for this one. Great job.

Any other medics attending Gates Of Fire? Just a couple hours here and there is all we need. Set your own hours. We could use a few more to make it easier on everyone else.
Warthog, i may be able to throw in an hour or 2 here and there. This is sort of my vacation time so, not that i dont want to help, but i like my vacation time. Preferably an hour or so during the day would be great. Qualifications: Combat Medic, US Army. Trained at Fort Sam Houston, TX

i step toward them and shove my shield against their weapon arm so they have nothing to swing at and wrap the back. step forward carefully though. protect your own legs at the same time. watch for their down-swing
if they do get a swing in on your way in, try to use your shield to push their sword down towards the ground. foot-on-ground, doesnt count.

The problem I'm running into, is that people are having issues with not being able to see the green near the pommel. Blah. screw 'em.
thats exactly what im talking about. The green tape around the bottom isnt for the person you are fighting. Its for you. It tells you that it has passed as a green weapon and that you can use it as a stabby. You dont have to stab someone and show them the tape everytime. If it passed as green and has green tape we are on our honor to use it as it is passed or failed. They dont need to see the green tape on the bottom. If it has a stabby tip and it passed as green the person you are attacking should assume that it is passed as green. Because first of all, it should have been checked and also if you are using the stabby tip after it was failed you are breaking rules and could hurt someone. The only reason a person you are attacking might want or need to see the tape is because maybe the stab felt a bit hard and they want to let you know. Just a question, but are you hitting someone with blue, green or red and then showing them the tape every single time you hit them? Cause that would waste a lot of time and isnt necessary at all.

It was my understanding that at events, if a weapon is blue/green and it passes for blue and green, you get a piece of blue tape and a piece of green. If it only passes for blue, then only a strip of blue tape. Its up to the wielder to call out the color that he is using at the time.
If it doesnt pass for green, there will be no green tape and the user shouldnt wield it as such in battles. So the tape isnt really for the person being attacked, but for the person doing the attacking. And this makes sense to me cause when i am fighting someone, my attention isnt on what color tape they have on their weapon.

Forecast for the 20th: H 29/L 21 20% chance of snow. It's not supposed to get above freezing all week and there is a decent chance of snow every day up to the event. That means a good layer of snow on the ground and likely some good drifts at the park. Who else is looking forward to this fact?
might have posted that a little to early Eoin, now the forecast says H 31/L 23 20% chance of snow. weather will change 3 or 4 times by then to im sure. But i cant wait to see Maeth at the event. I miss most of you guys.

Thanks for the quick response Izad! Either way we'll find a way to crash somewhere. Seems like some people are voting for a cheap motel if there's nothing else, which is fine.. we're definitely making this event.
If you want cheap i will give you information for probably the cheapest in this town. Its at the bottom. But you should know that this place is really crappy. I mean, the police have been called to this place on numerous occasions and people traveling smoke weed there all the time. Ive been there. But in case you want to look at it, here is the information. (there is a Holiday Inn right next door to this place.) Scott's Motel 1411 Wayne Ave. Indiana, PA 15701 (724) 465-5571 www.scottsmotel.com

I know Araduin isn't in the area anymore to offer up his house like last year and I'd rather not have to pay for a hotel. Amaranth, We are still working that out between Realm members and will let you know. The lose of Araduins house is a big hit on us as far as accommodations for people to sleep. But as we work it out we will let you know but we cant make any promises that we will be able to house everybody or anyone at this point.

I have a questiong about this:
minors are only allowed if their parent or permanent legal guardian is on site. Am I correct in understanding that no under 18s will be allowed on site even if their parent's have signed over legal guardianship temporarily to a chaperone? And, is this a park rule or an event rule?
omg, these questions are every where but its like no one understands it. I know it sucks cause my realm has a few minors too but here it is. A minor 17 years old or younger can not attend unless their parent(s) or legal guardian is standing right there beside them at troll and is camping at the event for the entire week. This does not mean that your older brother or sister or cousin can be your guardian. It is a parent that gave birth to you, adopted you or a legal guardian that is appointed by the state or something. Its not that hard to understand. Gorbag, i didnt mean this as a personal assault against you, i was just using yours as an example that every one keeps asking. I wasnt attacking you personally at all. So please take no offense.

I think Boots and footwear are one of the hardest parts of your garb to find. You need something that looks period but at the same time, feels good wearing them all day and will stand up to the fighting and abuse that we put them through.
But i am going to look into these ones that Valkyr put up. And Valkyr, if you have these, do they stand up well? And how are they at keeping water out?

Hey Frothgar, This is Izad of Maethodoron. hows it rollin? Just to put this in here for you, i dont know what you would consider it, but my very first National event was Badon Hill I or II. But for that event, the only garb i had, fighting and dress, was a pair of sweat pants that i cut up a little and a shirt with the buttons taken out and replaced with string. For my footwear, i only had 1 pair of moccasins. That is it. And it sucked. But thats all i had. Hope this helps.
