What is the correct pronunciation of Dagorhir?
« on: November 01, 2007, 08:42:00 pm »
What is the Tolkien-correct pronunciation of Dagorhir?  I am very currious to know as there seems to be a bit of a disagreement over this.

Please include proper accents.

Sirilay would probably love to handle this topic.  I'm pretty sure she knows the correct pronunciation, it's translation into every elvish dialect in existence, and the written history of each root word.

Being a speaker of "American," a second form of English  , it doesn't matter if I pronounce it wrong, because to me it'll always be "dagger-here."

IIRC, "dagger-here" is fairly close, but not quite there. Americans tend to swallow the second syllable and make it indistinct. It's more like "DAH-gore-here."

Probably not much to worry about unless you try to go spying on elves. Then it'll kill you as surely as being a blue-eyed Beduin or a Yankee who claims to be from Staunton, VA.

"CULL-en Mac GEH-loch" Isn't it obvious?
Of course, it's not lenited properly. From my feeble knowledge of Gaelic, it probably should be Mac Gealai (Mac GEHL-eye). It's not much of a problem really, unless I try to go spying on Connachtmen...

Calean (and now that I know how to pronounce YOUR name   ), YOU ROCK! But sorry, Elarath, I'm not that educated in Tolkien languages. Just a hobby.

There was actually another topic discussing the pronunciation of several Dagorhir words (mostly chapter names), including Dagorhir, and you can find that here. All I did was put "pronounce dagorhir" into the Search function   I still don't know the syllable emphasis, but I can tell you I will by my course on Tolkien languages at Rag XXIII.

I really meant what I thought about different chapters pronouncing Dagorhir differently. Sirilay's native tongue isn't Sindarin, so even she doesn't pronounce it as it 'should' be.
