Those Romans might be more useful than I thought...
« on: March 11, 2008, 09:15:00 pm »
I would just like to say Dagorhir does equal higher test scores.  And here's the story...
So today I took the National Latin Exam for Latin 2.  It was a fairly easy test, a few things on future participles, some about the obscure uses of the Ablative case such as Absolutes and Cause.  There was also a few questions concerning some of Roman culture, such as the Arbiter Bidendi, Pax Romana, SPQR and the like.
The interesting thing was, there was a question about the Pontifex Maximus. We had never discussed in class what a Pontifex Maximus was, so I normally would have been stumped.  But, thanks to Gurrundi, I recalled him talking about his position as the Pontifex and I immediately related it to religious activities as Gurrundi is known to control the weather.
My Latin teacher confirmed after the test that I was correct in choosing my answer.
So here's my thanks to Gurrundi, Pontifex Maximus.
Ave Rome!

Coolness! All I can say to that is:

Reg: All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Attendee: Brought peace?
Reg: Oh, peace - shut up!
Reg: There is not one of us who would not gladly suffer death to rid this country of the Romans once and for all.
Dissenter: Uh, well, one.
Reg: Oh, yeah, yeah, there's one. But otherwise, we're solid.

Living Latin ftw, something about this... trasnverbilzation thats taught as the standard in most courses and has been for ages annoys me.

(for those of you out of the loop, most Latin courses teach people how to read Latin, translate and directly speak it in English. Living Latin is a movement to teach Latin as a language like any other foreign language is taught, BY SPEAKING IT)

Nieros, "Living Latin" sounds cool. Are you trying to speak ancient Latin or medieval Latin? I was under the impression that we don't know much about the pronunciation of Latin in Roman times.

Taking two years of Latin at private school helped me learn French, Spanish, and strongly helped me pass My National Exam for my medical career.

Roughly up to 65% of all words in English come from Latin.  Roughly up to 35% come from Greek ... Or something like that.

Yeah Rome!  Ave Rome!  Ave Grrundi ... and his dancing at Badon Hill 2007.  Where is that Video of him dancing on YouTube, his white outfit, and stars sunglasses?

Ha, I had to take that test as well on monday. Of course, I was only taking the Latin 1 test, so it was probably easier than yours. But I do remember the SPQR thing from a flag of the Romans...at least I think it was them at Rag, and then because of that oh so wholesome tradition of crucifixions, I was able to answer a couple of questions concerning details on that! Thanks to the Romans for being so darn helpful!

Ave Gurrundi.

I took one semester. Halfway through, the prof had a heart attack. Took them three weeks to get another teacher. We went from Veni, Vidi, Vici to Weni, Widi, Wici. I signed up for Elementary Spanish I the next semester.

Ahh, but do you mean wici as in WeeChee, or Wiki.

I hate pronunciation because my teacher can't make up her mind. I feel like a complete nerd for having an issue with it but if somethign has a long A... you should pronounce it with a long A! (makes discerning spoken feminine accusative from feminine ablative rather obnoxious.)

At first I was against turning 'v's to 'w's, but after getting failed on my first oral exam I quickly changed my tune. It's weird for me to practice with a classmate and hear them pronouce the 'v', or a soft 'c'. It completely throws me off, and I panic for a while afterwards.

The only exception I make for that is Necavi, because Necawee just sounds weird...
Do I contradict myself?
I sure do.

Bump for great justice!
My school received the test scores back today and I must say my teacher was quite impressed with the overall test scores.  (He is the only Latin teacher in my highschool, which is the largest in the county.)
Out of 12 students that took the exam, 8 of them received awards, including myself.
I received the maxima cum laude award, which means with the greatest praise and is just under the highest award possible (suma cum laude I think).
Out of 40, I had a 35.  Pretty good I'd say.
Oddly enough, my teacher decided to look at the top 3 questions which most people got wrong and the question about the Pontifex Maximus was among those three.  Once again, Ave Rome!

Now, that's why I think the split infinitive should be allowed in English. If the Romans could mess with the order of a prepositional phrase like that, putting the preposition in the middle, I should be allowed to rightly split my infinitives!

You are. Almost everyone has been in agreement for a while now that there is no sane reason to  even consider not allowing the split infinitive as a construction.

If we were allowed to post private contact information, I would ask for his email.

Really though, split infinitives appear in CORRECT answers on the ACT and SAT, so teaching that they are some how incorrect (for no good reason, ask anyone how is anti-split-infinitive why you shouldn't split it, it's fun!) is actually bad for high-school students. A college professor clinging to such and out-dated theory is really sad.

Thanks everybody for your kind words.
Alric - Infinitives?  Since when is any of those words even close to being an infinitive?  I see an adjective, then a preposition, then the noun all in the ablative case.

Oh, no infinitives there - I was just highlighting a parallel construction between the Latin prepositional phrase that can nest the preposition between the adjective and the noun and the English split infinitive. I think the fact that Latin can do cool stuff like that with the ablative is reason enough for English to do a similar split with our two-part infinitives.

Sorry to go all grammar-geek on your post.
