All the little angels rise up, rise up...
« on: May 14, 2007, 10:11:00 am »
I KNOW there are a lot of Terry Pratchett fans on these boards, and with the Glorious 25th of may coming very shortly I know some circles take the 25th as a sort of holiday to celebrate  Discworld books.

I think I'll be wearing a Lilac in my shirt that day, see if anyone else notices, cause ya know, you have to be able to discern who's on your side and who's not

How do they rise up,
Rise up, rise up?
How do they rise up,
Rise up high?

They rise fist up,
Fist up, fist up!
They rise fist up, fist up,
FIST UP HIGH!

Nieros, "Night Watch" instantly became one of my favorite books of all time.  My first unit, the Free Companions (back in the dim and distant past) used to grab a sprig of whatever was in bloom and add it to our costumes as a Mark.  More than once, we wore the lilac.

When "Night Watch" came out and I realized the significance of wearing the lilac in the story, it took me back 20+ years.  Like many of Pratchett's stories, that one brings me both laughter and tears.

The flag of the Free Companions showed a raised fist holding a broken chain.  The Free Companion who made our original banner died of cancer two years ago.  And for the record, the Free Companions won Dagorhir's very first unit field battle EVER.

On May 25, you'll know whose side I'm on.

Wow, I didn't mean to kill your cool idea/thread, Nieros.

I'm re-reading "Night Watch" and encouraging folk in my unit to read it too (the Guard is loosely based on Pratchett's Night Watch).

A couple of my favorite lines:

There must be dozens of them.  We're going to get CHEESED.*

* Like creamed, but it goes on for a long longer.
[SIC-notice, that's "a long longer," not "a little longer." You have to pay attention to every word or you miss some jokes.]

------------------------

Young Nobby Nobbs, having been recruited as an acting constable, said, "'M carvin myself a badge out of, of -- what's that, waxy, kind of like candles but you can't eat it?"

"Soap, Nobby."

(Some Dagorhir/Disc World Trivia: Vaida of the Kutriguri has the same given first name as 'Nobby' Nobbs -- St.John, pronounced "Sinjin.")

Ah it's alright Graymael, sometimes you can't help the kiss of death to discussions online

I instantly fell in love with the Guard books because the characters reminded me so much of My Unit, which was before I had read anything about The Guard. (and oddly enough, our colors are blue, grey and white, I Laughed out loud when I first visited The Guards website)

Night Watch is definetly one of my all time favorite books, (Hear that folks? two people have given it the "all time favorites" you should give it a read. seriously. It's awesome. well? what are you waiting for?)

As for favorite quotes, my signature line comes straight from that book, and this line gave me chills the first time I read it:

'In a world where we all move in curves he proceeds in a straight line. And going straight in a world of curves makes things happen.

Justice! Freedom! Reasonably priced love! and a hard boiled egg!

actually I could go for a hard boiled egg right now.

I just finished Night Watch last night.  Man, that was an awesome book!  You've had to have been there!
Now all I have to do is find some lilac...

Theif of Time was most definitely my favourite book-- As was Small Gods.

Because it's not easy being a fierce god trapped in the body of a One-Eyed Tortois.
Although I'm sure the Death of Rats is having the time of his life.

One of my favorite lines in "Small Gods" (paraphrased) takes place when the gods are raining fire down on a battle taking place on a beach.  A bunch of soldiers from the opposing armies take cover from the gods' wrath beneath an overturned boat on the beach, and start passing around a cigarette:

(As each soldier takes the smoke) "Thanks.  Think we'll get out of this alive?"

"Thanks. Who knows?"

THANK YOU.  WHO, INDEED?

--------------------------------

(Note for folks who haven't yet read the Discworld books -- Death, the Grim Reaper, always speaks in ALL CAPS with no quotation marks.  The fact that he shows up in that scene, hiding under the boat with the soldiers, and nobody takes note of it, is just brilliant.)

I'm certainly going to be celebrating the Glorious Revolution of Treacle Mine Road. "Night Watch" is one of my favorite Pratchett novels-- it's probably tied with "Soul Music."

Maybe I like those two best because they both contain recurring hard-boiled egg jokes.

"Well? I just like hard-boiled eggs."

I swear if I'm still a little old man playing dagorhir, I'll make myself some saffron robes and carry a broom around.

A unit of the history monks, we would just dance about playing our drums untill no one was looking...

There are some around my house, but I'll be away when the 25th comes 'round. I may have to get creative with the lilac-acquisition.

I can just imagine...

I'm lucky enough to have a lilac tree near my house.  But, it has already bloomed, and only dead flowers remain on it...Take what you get eh?

Happy Gloroius 25th of May to all!  (and a hard-boiled egg.)

All the lilacs have bloomed and gone 'round here; I called a florist and asked, "How much for a sprig of lilac?" She replied, "Fifty dollars."  "Five-0?" said I.  "Yes."  CLICK.

So I'm wearing a bloom which LOOKS like lilac, unless you get REALLY close.

I just ordered a bunch of silk lilacs we can all wear NEXT year.  See me at Guard Camp at Ragnarok and I'll hand you a sprig.

BTW, got the word from Straw that the Guard Badges came in yesterday.  They're badge-shaped embroidered patches with our skull/sword symbol on them, saying, "GUARD" above and "Fabricati Diem PVNC" below.

Fabricati Diem PVNC is the motto over the entrance to the yard of the Watch House in "Guards! Guards!  I believe it means "To Protect and Serve."

The Glorious 25th of May approaches again.

As a time-traveler, and because this is a leap year, I'm declaring that the lilac may be worn on both the 25th of May AND the TWENTY-FOURTH...if you were there.

Thus, Aratari who attend the Mayhem battle and festival may choose to wear the lilac.

...if they were there.

I wondered why I'd missed this thread, and then looked at the dates of all but the last post...

Silly Kyrax.  And after all this time, I'm finally reading "Night Watch".  Can't say why, but I happened on it during a book buying spree last week and got hooked.

And yes, I too am looking around for lilac, but I live in semi-arid grasslands.  So I don't know that I'm going to find any either.

This is an odd coincidence,  I was at the used book store today and picked up "Guards Guards".

Would you recommend I read this or do I need to start at the beginning of the series ?

The nice thing about Pratchett's books are that you can pretty much pick up any of them and read.  Also, "Guards Guards" is basically the beginning of the Guard portion of his Discworld novels so you should be good.

Personally I love the next one in the series the best "Men at Arms" where we are introducted to the world's only 6'3" dwarf.

Happy Birthday, Aondor!

Happy Glorious 25th of May to everyone else!

Cryn, as Fafnir says, "Guards! Guards!" is a fine place to dive into the Discworld.  It's the first book I read; now my family owns them all (4 or 5 autographed too).

A couple of Guard members brought a spectator from New Zealand to yesterday's Mayhem event; she testified that it WAS indeed already the Glorious 25th of May in New Zealand, so we were okay wearing the lilac.

People pointed out that you could tell where certain Guard members died by the silk lilac petals scattered on the ground...

YOU ARE HAVING A NEAR DEATH EXSPEREACE AIRGO I AM HAVING A NEAR VIMS EXPERIANCE.

So I'm beginning to think Dagorhir is just underground advertising for Terry Pratchett...aaaand it's working, because I'm now going to go out and find a copy of Nightwatch and Guards Guards! just so I can understand all these jokes, because man, these sound like good reads that I've been missing out on.

I definitely began reading Guards! Guards! and got to the end of the first page and had already laughed out loud like...three times.

The assassins assassining and hussies hussying etc. etc. was the line that made me go, man, this is going to be a great book.

Not that I like things that mention assassins and hussies in the same sentence but, it's my kind of humor.

I feel it prudent to resurrect this thread(again) rather than make a new one.

There's fifteen minutes left to the Glorious 25th of May and I can smell the lilacs just outside the window.

Shrike, you posted a pic of the SECOND Free Companion banner.

The original made by Cosmo on felt was pennant-size - Argo/Silver Dagger used to have it on his spear when he fought.

*I* have that one.  ;)

I was there. And I didn't panic.
