Hey man.

That was legitimate offer. We're running a Basic fitness and exercise class for Rag U.

For every ten pounds you lose, you'll gain a level of sword fighter proficiency.

It's true, you'd be surprised how little weight you have to lose to show improvement in running. I gained just short of 20 lbs over the last year at college from having a weight set in my room, and while I can lift heavy things at work a lot easier, my running speed has noticeably slowed down (even with keeping my cardio up...).

I'll probably make it to this class. Even though I know a little about fitness and exercise, I can always learn more.

@Sváva It's a very tempting color. I might have to get a yard just to make something small with or accent some new garb.

I wear the face masks because of my piercings.  I put padding in particular spots so that when I get jacked in the face it's not going to rip them out or rip them at all.  But that's just me, people without piercings I suppose just like the aesthetic aspect of them.

My chapter has a couple of Opera singers who wear them to protect their face/throat.  I'm working on them to add a helm, which is all I'm suggesting for you too.  I totally understand the desire for safety, but let's add a touch of aesthetic too please.

I agree, I'm ditching my brimmed floppy hat and getting a helm by Forkbeard that will accomplish keeping the sun out of my eyes, give me additional protection, and look bamf. Win/win for me. Can't wait to see how it looks with my mask.

How is a ****ty plastic helm going to help in the slightest vs a proper shot? Im guessing you have a heck of a lot lower hit calibration or something. Also I agree. cover the weapon they will last longer and it looks better.

"That looks like a plastic helmet. Between that and the allowed head hits you mentioned, I have to ask what the hit calibration is like in your old game? We hit pretty hard here. Hard enough that a helmet like that might not be up to the job if we allowed head hits."

Hello Varadrin.

That helmet is a professional-grade baseball helmet, which I removed the bill from, spray-painted gold, and added leather cheek pieces and a horse-hair plume to for aesthetics (see attached). It has saved me from a concussion on countless occasions because our swing calibration is, in fact, very high. Why, just last week I was hit by a full-force downward stroke from a 6lb two-hander which, were it a real sword, would have cut me in half from crown to sternum.

Further, that shield you see me bearing weighs 17 lbs and is a punch shield to boot. Players on our field (myself included) have been struck across the head with it, been swept/knocked off their feet by it, and had the wind knocked out of them. My guess is we hit just as hard as you guys in Dag. I look forward to meeting you in battle someday

And yes, Tooka, you're right. Most of us do have our weapons covered, I just need to get off my lazy bum and buy some nylons or socks or something that'll fit the curvature of that sword.

$5 - 3 pair packs at Walmart should cover it nicely or a hand sewn cover.

While you shouldn't have to worry about excessive headshots in our game, good on you for making your safety equipment look period. Only downside is even though it could probably protect you against a 90mph fastball, it won't protect you from our foam arrows in game.

Also, there's an odd rule against metal on hands, so remember to leave the chainmaille gloves in the car when you check out a Dag event (they do look pretty cool tho).

This just came up in another thread -- the rule is actually against rigid metal gauntlets, so chainmaille gloves are, by the letter of the law, totally legit.

Thats great that its something a bit safer, From the initial picture it really looked like some odd type of costume helmet which wouldnt save you vs anything. I was worried and my initial impression always leads me to believe the bad gear leads to soft hitting (as it tends to in 90% of the battle games ive participated in).

You do realize that shield is heavier then most real shields at that weight right? Im glad to see heavy gear but you might almost be over doing it.

Either way Glad to have you out, im sure someday we will meet and have a fun time I just always worry first that people don't play at the same level some of us like to.

I understand your concern, Varadin and I appreciate your explaining it. I share the same initial reaction. And I'm aware the shield is heavier than most authentic ones of the same size- its because I didn't want it to break *ever* so I bought sturdy wood. Sure makes the arm tired but totally worth it for mental assurance.

Yup, this game's wreaked merry havoc on my hands too. I feel your pain. Other possibilities for hand protection would be lacrosse gloves or MMA gloves (paint over logos/bright colors, though!) or leather gauntlets. Between Forkbeard, Maximus, Hivemind, and a few others who frequent these boards, some decent hand protection shouldn't be hard to come by.

Kurai, you were in single digits - kinda like D&D. You only gain a modifier when you hit 12+

Yes, that is plastic lammelar. We are aware that it doesn't count as armor, and we never try to claim it as such. [Even though it does stop sharp knives.] Also, the second guy in on the left is wearing a modern safety helmet. We realize they may look ugly and totally non-period, but safety>realism.

You guys should get some metal or leather lamellar and a legit metal helmet. Much less ugly and still just as protective! Especially for Dagorhir combat you don't even need thick metal for the helmet.

I'm happy enough that most people showed up for practice in garb that day, lol. There are plans in the works for more realistic armor, but in the meantime the saftey gear is good enough for practices.
