It is entirely up to the realm you are with.  Some realms permit ages as low as 13.

However, events, like the one shown in wreckreation nation, generally have very strict rules on age limits.  With smaller events, it is up to the realm or unit hosting it, but they generally adhere to the age limit as well.

You can be any age that your realm has set as a minimum, since they dictate their own practices. If you aren't in a realm, then it's the standard age you set.

The rules in the Handbook are for national events only.

I know a lot of folks that let their kids or younger siblings fight with their weapons in the backyard. Nothing prevents you from practicing until you can attend an official battle.

Aratari allowed me to fight when I was 15 but I definitely see why it is recommended waiting for that age to fight in a full battle.
However practices are open to most ages here.

Sixteen was chosen for a lot of reasons for national events like Ragnarok. Individual chapters and units may vary. Waivers for those under 18 should be signed by a parent and/or notarized.

In Byzantium, we use the same rules as major events (notarized waiver at the age of 16).  However, we do make exceptions for the 13-15 y/o's who prove they are mature enough to handle being out on the field, AS LONG AS they have a parent/legal guardian out with them every time they fight.  We haven't run into the issue of anyone under 13 wanting to play (yet, with the show last night, it could change).

14 sounds good. The start of high school, for most people. And if everybody's middle school were like mine, I'd want to beat on people whenever and however possible :p.

I won't be able to go to Rag, simply because of a lack of a legal guardian coming to watch over me. So i do think that the age should be 16, or hey, even 14 for freshman in high school, but i also think that some events should have a way to bypass "legal supervision" for major events like Rag, with maybe a waiver, or forum. However, i do think its important to talk to someone who is around 18 to maybe looking after you, that way you can have safe fun

It's a dicey issue to say the least.  It was recently brought up at the last Rag and it's currently being researched.  If I understand the issue correctly, under Ohio law (where Rag takes place), we may not be able to administer first aid without parental consent, or we may be legally liable for everything that happens.  Though like I said it's currently being researched and I may not have the issue down correctly.

That said, everything we do is volunteer run, including medics.  We don't want to put that liability on them or the organization.

Understand that we have these seemingly bizarre rules not just to protect you, but also to protect ourselves.

Twolf is right. The rules are rules for a reason and the age rule in particular was taken under careful consideration last year. Sorry to disappoint, but it's not going to be waived for big events.

I attend several events in Ohio, most not Dag related. One of them is a family event and I am fairly certain that Twolf is correct in that first aid (outside of a life-threatening situation) cannot be delivered without parental consent, even by an EMT/Paramedic/Nurse/MD

i have life guarding, and to administer first aid and parent is there you have to get parent consent, if parent is unavailible consent is given. also with that 12 and up is considered an adult

if you are under eighteen, all you have to do is, print out the waiver, fill it out, take it to your local bank. have you parent sign it and get it notorized (i get it notorized for free, but i know some places charge a couple bucks) and as long as you have it with you and notorized, your fine. im just 16 and i wen to badon by myself, actually i was 15. but make sure you get it notorized or else they wont let you in. it would be pretty upsetting to have to make the drive then not be able to participate.

This is not correct.  You must have SOMEONE who is 18 with you in order to come as a minor.  You may have gotten through if someone wasn't paying close enough attention, but the rule is quite clear.

I have a 17 year old and a 19 year old.  The 19 year old can take his younger brother to any event, as long as I send a signed and notarized waiver with him.  My 17 year old can NOT go to the event by himself.

Alright, I am asking for clarification on the age issue, specifically for Ragnarok XXIV.

Here is the situation here in my chapter.  Most of our fighters are 20+ years of age.  However, one has a relative who is 15 years of age.  Now we understand that he cannot, and never was, able to fight at Ragnarok or any other large event and he is okay with that standing.  However, he would still like to enjoy Ragnarok this year, and in the future, take pictures and what not.  I saw in another forum post (forgot which one) that at war council this past year, the age requirement was raised to 18 with the exception if the parent or legal guardian was also there.

But from what I am gathering here, as long as he has someone over the age of 18 (as I mentioned he does have a relative over 20) to "chaperone" him, for lack of better terms, at Ragnarok he may come?

As I mentioned, asking for clarification on this issue, so I may relay the approriate information to him.

Hi Guys,

No problem with asking for clarification.  No one wants to drive X hours and Y miles only to fiond out they can't get in.  That would suck.

Kaim, You have it exactly.  Bring the signed, NOTARIZED waiver along with an 18 or over adult and you are fine.

Belmir,

Your 15 year old can come with you guys, just bring that waiver.

There was a discussion at Rag War Council about this, but it has been tabled until we have more information.  A new waiver could also be in the works, so keep an ear out for that as we progress through the year.

We look forward to having you guys at Rag this year.

Lykos, Belmir,

I think that last reply was wrong. Let me explain: A minor needs a legal guardian. Anybody over 18 is NOT a legal guardian. You can go, I think it was to city hall, and have the guys parents sign over a legal guardianship to anyone over 18, but there has to be a legal guardian with them, and, anytime a minor is on site, said legal guardian must be with them as well.

So, if said legal guardian goes out for pizza, the minor goes out for pizza.

The reason for this is simple- only a legal guardian can make certain decisions with regard to medical care, etc.

If a minor showed up with a gaggle of 18 year olds, and something bad happened, who'd deal with it? Someone has to be responsible for any minor.

I agree.  I think people under the age of 18 need to be with a real guardian. It's common sense. Ragnarok isn't designed for teenagers.  ;)

Local realm events/practices are a completely different scene though. We have a few kids who fight in Mordor regularly.

Mordrauk,

That is what one of the problems we discussed at War Council was about... That currently the rule just requires an adult, NOT a legal guardian.  This came up as two issues.

1)  The issue of Medical approval.  Currently, since we do not require LEGAL guardians, it was not someone who can give approval for Medical procedures.

2)  The issue of immature children being led by a only slightly less immature adult.  I even stood up at RWC and explained that (As I said above) my 19 year old could take my 17 year old to an event (Like Rag and Badon Hill) and be "responsible" for him.  Let's be honest, 18 and 19 is not THAT much better than 16 and 17 when it comes to maturity.  I doubt that many of us DIDN'T do something stupid when they were 18.

So we tabled the issue of what constitutes a Guardian versus a Legal Guardian until we could hear more from the lawyer from Ohio who volunteered to work on this pro bono (Y@Y!).

So the current rule lets my oldest son (Who likes fireworks and burning things) can take my second eldest to Rag.  Despite my 17 year old being annoyed with me over this, I believe it SHOULD be legal guardians only.  It just is not yet.  Hopefully we can fix this at the next RWC.

Alright, I'll stay tuned.

I may also just tell him he can't go period cause I was going to implement that rule into my chapter anyway.  I'm sorry, but I'm 23, and I do not have children nor do I want to put up with anything that may cause me drama on my vacation from work lol.

However, I do trust him and hence the reason I was asking.  But I've been to three Ragnaroks (19,20 and 22) and two of the three (not saying which ones) where pretty much spoiled by teenage drama, and the whole doing things that aren't the smartest things to do.  I do however, remember being a teenager myself.

I think one of those instances of teen silliness is what may have even sparked the discussion at RWC this past year to begin with!

We shall see where it goes.  I would like to see "Legal Guardianship" be instituted.

Same here.  I went to Rag last year with a legal guardian who wasn't my parent but I had all the forums signed and kept out of trouble.  Being a 16 year old knocked off most of the crazy parties from access but I'm not really one for those kind of activities.
I plan on going to Rag again this summer because it was such a blast last year and I would hate to have gone when I was 16 and been perfectly safe, then get rejected being 17.  Although, even if I wasn't allowed to fight or attend parties, I'd still go for photography and the general atmosphere.

Well, nothing changes this coming year.  RWC tabled the discussion until tHIS Rag, so no changes could be in place until Rag 25, 2010.  This Rag will have the same policy.
