Why is dagorhir growing because blacktower is running some of the best events around.. thats why.. like I dunno winters heart 3.

On the serious.

Dagorhir is growing because people are willing to make selfless commitment of there time money and effort for everyone else.(few organizations are like this)

Combat is addictive its hardwired into mankinds brain and dagorhir provides a perfect place to tap into everyones inner warrior

Dagorhir provides camradarie(sp?) its a feeling that we all belong to something and we all share our great sport/game

and most important

Also QFT - Any Dagorhir who hasn't seen "Fight Club" should rent it today.

Western Culture in the 20th Century painted the Warrior Philosophy out as something bad, pretending we're too civilized to recognize a basic truth of nature.  To fight is to strive; without the fight we are less.

I think Dave Mordal actually has a very good sense of why Dagorhir is appealing:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwU6-lexXWY

Listen to what he says about his reason for doing this, at about 2:40 in the promo.  The first bit:

"The reason that I'm doing this show is, there are so many sports out there that don't cost that much to do, and you can get involved in."

Good stuff.

Rome shares every single piece of info they know *except* one unique and special type of armoring technique that they hold near and dear to their hearts as part of what makes their unit special and unique... in my mind that's precisely an example of the type of sharing Dagorhir is all about! (1) A willingness to share and improve the game, yet (2) Having a few unique cultural elements that are held near and dear because they are part of a group's unique cultural identity.

I love me some sharing and improving the game, and I also love me some people who are passionate about carving out their special cultural niche in this diverse game!  I appreciate Rome for having a long history of building this game of ours, and I also appreciate Rome for wanting to be Rome!

Dominus, thanks for posting to clear that up a bit. I meant no disrespect or insult to my favorite unit to fight on the field. Nor did I judge you for what I perceived as your policies. I only quoted information I read on romanempire.net, so if that's not really your policy, you might want to change the requirements for citizenship there, or clarify them in the paperwork so it doesn't look that way.

Thanks for the kind words, Dedric. The Roman web page says what it's supposed to say. I'm sorry it seemed ambiguous. I wish you had actually quoted our site's citizenship requirement, they read thusly:

"No Roman may assist a non-citizen with the design or construction of a muscle cuirass. The muscle cuirass is a trademark specific to Rome, and its construction is a rite of passage for our new citizens. Design and construction of other equipment, including weapons, shields, generic armor, is a different matter altogether. Non-citizens are welcome at armor making sessions where muscle cuirasses are not being made. Romans should assume some responsibility for promoting medieval combat societies and providing assistance, help, and encouragement to all who share our interest in medieval combat. The most basic tenant of good sportsmanship is accepting some responsibility for your opponents’ successful enjoyment of the sport. "

I think the reason Dagorhir keeps growing (or at least the reason I'm so die-hard about it) is that primal connection you feel when you fight along-side your friends on the field (or even people you may have only known 5 minutes).

The other thing I really like is how all the veterans give us newbies something to aspire to. Before I ever got a chance to pick up a sword, I was speaking your names like some little kid that had just heard some great tale. You guys can be a little harsh on the boards sometimes (it's all in good fun), but you still inspire me to try and be great like you, so I might kill you on the field of battle one day.

You suck :)

Its cool that you feel that way about the vets though. I am sure they appriciate it.  Hope to meet you on the field sometime soon.

Reading these posts makes me understand why I like Dagorhir. To me, it's not a game. It's a lifestyle. Dagorhir is a veritable microcosm, fully functioning and thriving.

Two years ago, when my two fellow friends discovered Dagorhir, you'd think we discovered the meaning of life. It took us about a year before any Dag-Legal weapons were produced, and another year before we had our first practice with several people. Now, nearly four and a half months after forming a Dur Dagnir, a unit of Anvard, the game has become more to me than anything I've ever known. My interests are not limited to combat, they include all-day-role paying events, camp outs, foam smithing sessions, etc. I also have a great interest in film making, and I have a couple scripted movies, planned and ready to be shot. While I'm only 15, I think I've begun to comprehend what Dagorhir is truly about.

My point in this message is simple: Dagorhir is a community, people like you and me, sharing a same passion. Anything you do to help the unit will only help you. The cliche "You reap what you sow" demonstrates this perfectly. In order to get anything out of the game, physically, mentally and socially, you must first put effort into it.

Finally, to those who started the game, and those who keep it going, you all have my eternal and undying thanks. To those who have yet to learn this lesson or understand what I'm saying: do not lose faith. Your time will come.

Wishing everyone a joyful and healthy new year,
Your friend and fellow fighter,

Turgon Evenstar, Warrior of the Light, High Lord of Dûr Dagnir.

It's easy to get introduced to Dagorhir (a friend tells you about it, you see it online, etc.) but the thing that made me stay with it was how much fun all my friends around me made it. Back when I started, even though I was new, and died quite often (my first battle was about 5 days after my first practice :P ), the members of my unit went out of their way to point out good things that I was doing in battle, and suggest ways to improve that which I wasn't doing so well with. When good sportsmanship is shown on the field at a battle, who in their right mind WOULDN'T stay with Dagorhir, which is such a fun way to incorporate fantasy, sport, and a sense of community?

Though I wasn't a very good sword & board fighter, my unit made it easy for me to keep trying, since everyone tried to point out why I kept dying, and they suggested certain shots I might want to try when I was fighting this particular class. Also, even though I don't have many weapons of my own, my friends are usually fine with me borrowing their gear, which makes Dag so accessible for me.

So, really, it's all about just hanging out with a lot of nice, fun guys, and feeling like part of the reason they're there is to help you succeed and have fun along with their own success and fun.

I'm very new to Dag, I've been to a total of one practice; however, it was a wonderful experience and I haven't stopped gleeing since. A friend of mine suggested I come with him, told me I would love it, he was right.

The Archenlander/Narnians instantly put me at ease. It was like going from a mundane existence of living on on-line rpgs, to having the curtain thrown back and being exposed to a whole new, bright and shiny old fantastical world. It was a homecoming that I have been looking for. I felt as if I'd been embraced by this new family, like my very own pack or clan. Was sweet and made me feel excited, the world shall be my oyster..and spit up a pretty green pearl for me!

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I think you are growing because so many of the people here are splendid. My mind was in a tizzy just hearing about all the fascinating and splendid people I could meet; that coupled with the already wonderful group I have met...it has me more than a little impish and bouncy.

I have spent all weekend, scouring on-line, my bedroom, talking and chatting and plotting. All about Dag, garb, ideas, Character back-story, the endless possibilities of joining this world. I am more happy then I have been in a long time and I can't see that ending any time soon.

*happy dances way out to go chat about dress ideas for my garb and planning with our pretty colour scheme*

Back in October, Lothlorien held its first "Major" event.  We had people from many different Realms and several newbies from our own Realm were experiencing their first event ever.  Before this they had only fought in small groups.

At the end of the evening during feast, one of our newest guys came up to me.  He started thanking me for making this the best experience he has ever had.  H e said he finally felt like he was... was...

"Home?" I said.

"YES!!!" he yelled.

He then wandered off with an awed look in his eyes.

I felt like our Event was a definite success at that point.

QFT... every event becomes a success when a new member finds what they've been looking for their entire life!

I think that's why Dagorhir is such a success... it's what we have all been looking for.

Great attitude IE_Grappler.  Thanks for taking that in the vein that I meant it.  Besides, we know that Modesto (up near me) is sadly the real foreclosure land.

As for why Dagorhir keeps growing, I think it is because Dagorhir allows each of us to find our own way to enjoy participating.  Some are here for the fighting.  Some for playing a character.  Some want to make things, others use it as a social outlet, and for others it is just a great way to get outside and do something fun.

Graymael wasn't ALWAYS this pro-growth of Dagorhir. He never tried to recruit ME when he was my paperboy! On the sharing of weapons tech, I suppose my experience is limited, and a little outdated, but the only foamsmith I ever saw treat her designs as a 'trade secret' was my ex. She had a cool design for arrows that was the farthest-shooting and most accurate at Rag 18. She and I had bag argument. I believe in open-source (one of these days, I plan to learn The Ways Of The Penguin): had others seen her design, it might well have gotten improved upon and become the standard. Instead, it stagnated and died. And I'm too lazy to reverse-engineer it. They still fly good though. Trade=Growth  Secrecy/Isolation=Withering.

I agree.  People who don't share weapons technology are jerks and are actively impeding the growth of Dagorhir.

You know who you are.

Well, in the Order of Tauren we have some very talented foam smiths, among which I definitely count myself--I don't mean to brag, but false modesty isn't that endearing either, and all my stuff is pretty awesome.

LOL, ok, now this I like. You are only the third person I have met in 45 years who understands the Truth of Humility.   I am Grimdell of Sosaria, in Truth, Love, and Courage, well met.

WOW.  I just finished updating the spreadsheet where DBGA tracks Chapter contact information (I added 6 more chapters to it and updated officers and contact information for a bunch of existing groups).

Bear in mind some of these chapters on the list are inactive right now, but...since converting Dagorhir to the "Everybody's equal" chapter system in 2001, we've had 143 chapters sign up.  ONE HUNDRED FORTY-THREE.

WOW.

one of the reasons in my opinion that Dag's numbers are increasing while other groups are stagnant or declining is that the people here have not forgotten its a game.  We are here to have fun with other fellow nutters ...err enthusiasts and we have not fallen into that quagmire trap of making the combat stupidly soft tapping so that skill and effort have purpose here not just in game stats or a 1.8oz 4ft long sword.

It's the fun of hanging with and fighting against/with good people that is the real soul of this game.

If that is ever forgotten Dagorhir will just become another brand x "sport" that puts fun behind politics and brown nosing. The only thing fun should be behind or on par with is safety

Well that's my two cents at any rate  ;D

I would like to add that in Dagorhir, there are many, many people who do not give up on you. I have seen some on the verge of giving up because they couldn't get this move right, or couldn't make a good weapon, but people stepped up and helped them, which, in turn made them feel good and wanting to stay with Dagorhir.

I know in my first few years,  I ran Scion and Lashiec ragged with the millions of questions I had. My guys do the same to me now, and I find myself echoing what my mentors taught me.

If it were not for people like them, those who had little confidence when first joining Dag would have left. Because of these people, many of us, (me included) found the confidence and strength to learn and keep on going. I am very greatful to have had such awesome teachers in my Angaron freinds, as I am sure many of you can say about others in this wonderful sport.

A small thing like, "Good job!" when a newb gets in a kill, is a HUGE lift for them. It's the little things that make the bigger things possible, if you can follow that.

I know this feeling, when I first joined up with my group I had no idea what I was in for. I mean I decided on a whim to join Dagorhir. I met up with the division leader and then I met the second in command of the entire group and instantly fell in love with Dag. It was when I was watching and then decided to leave and was stopped and told to come join in the fight that I decided I would keep coming back. I died a lot at first... hell I still die a lot as everyone around me is amazing.

It great when you haven't been playing long and you get a good shot in and people notice or you manage to kill someone that has 7+ years more experience then you do playing. Its a wonderful feeling, and if all Dagorhir Chapters are like the one I am in then they are amazing.

Whne I first learned of Dagorhir. It reminded me of my old group.  Medieval Fantasy Combat Organization.  But much more fun. And on a national level.   Where as MFCO was only regional to the southwest.    Unlike MFCO. Dagorhir is still here today.  I know some day I will be at an event.

But anyways.  I believe  Dagorhir is growing due to teh fact it is fun. It is safe.   Safer then SCA combat. Definately safer then Adria combat.    Be able to dress up  do combat.    And meet alot of people and make friends in person. Unlike  MMO's.   And best of all it isn't complicated like some LARP's.     And I'll say this  the use of actual bows with padded arrows.  Where as  other groups wouldn't do that. They'd use an imaginary bow with a spell packet.    I don't know about you. But spell packets do not have the range of an actual arrow.       But in the end I will say it's the fun and the friendship. A big happy family.  I see Dagorhir growing more. Maybe even internationally some day.

We are somewhat international. We have a offical chapter in Puerto Rico, and we used to have one in Japan (I belive the founding member moved).

We have a budding "almost' chapter in Australia.
