There is a member of our clan who wants to be an Orc, but he has no idea what to use to paint himself green! Any tips/tricks for my friend?

1 tbs Crisco
2 tbs baking soda

add drops of food coloring while mixing until you reach desired color.

I was told to mix food coloring and water in a fine-mist spray bottle, then have someone spray you down nice and evenly. Stand there and let it dry. You get super-even color, like Lady Death did when she turned her family into goblyns....or like Cryn when she breaks out Othr1 (WOW!)

Green tempra paint mixed with a little black works well. Tempra paint does come off easily and you smell like a third grade art room.

Solusar uses black acrylic paint to paint himself black.

I have seen the results from food dye and it looks great but I haven't used it myself.

The problem with costume makeup is it can actually be preety messy, it has a hard time holding up to the heavy sweating people do when they fight and it's usually of the grease paint varity, which gets all over everything and is a pain in the butt to get out and off.

Just use Acrylic paint. So much easier to get then apply. It's like $1.85 for a bottle of green at Wal-Mart.

I'm with Skeith on this one, you should use acrylic paint. I used it yesterday at Battle at the Broken Wheel and it worked like a charm. Only cost me a dollar for a bottle and it was pretty easy to get off afterwards.

the mask keeps my face and skull toasty when it is cold. Plus it works best when it is one on one. It causes too much tunnel vision to survive a large brawl.

My first attempt to make homemade body/face paint resulted in what felt like jelly and ended up being like an edible body paint (got curious about flavor, seeing as how it was made of edible stuff, a bit sweet, not too tasty)...so...alittle freaked out that a site listing instructions for kids halloween stuff would show how to make that sort of thing...lol. I was trying for something that would look like a tattoo, but this stuff definitely didn't...the combination was 3 tbsp corn starch, 1 tbsp flour, 3/4 cup of light corn syrup, 1/4 cup water, and food coloring.

Military camoflage pastels are tough to apply and tough to take off. The first thing I thought when I saw someone with them properly applied was "Goblin". They last for days, probably better for long term application than anything else you can find.

Negatives are that, because of this, you'd have to sleep with the stuff on, and stain anything your face touched. On a related note it's very difficult to wash the stain off of any clothes it might get on.

In light green/loam color. I don't know how well other camo kits may or may not work.

we use green food coloring and water in a spray bottle works very well and washes off in the shower. well mostly washes off with the first shower. it will dye finger nails and toes and any cuts you have for about a week though =)

I just experimented with the food coloring mixed with water in a spray bottle thing last night, deffinately works well for anyone with enough body hair to worry about having it matted with acrylics, latex or pastels. You need to use, like, the whole thing of food coloring in the water, though.

When I first started spraying, I didn't think it was working well at all, but by the time it dried I had a nice green tone to me. And yes, washed off with relative ease, compared to greasy body paint.

Big thanks to Lady Death on this, if I hadn't read about your method, I'd probably have to shave my body hair everytime I Ork'd it up, and my wife would be devastated.

you should use one bottle of green food coloring to every like 16 ounces, give or take. the more food coloring the greener you are.

I'd like to give Smudge & Morgack of the Dur-D South credit for teaching me the ways of green, and the spray bottle idea

They also found that GFS has the best price and largest bottle of food coloring. They've been doing it for years. Gotta give credit where credit is due

Stell is right, Food coloring and water. You can also mix in a little sunscreen. Or put sunscreen on before you get green. Food coloring alone gives you about SPF 4. The thick skin on your hands and feet will absorb more color than the rest of your skin. I wear boots so that I don't have to dye my feet. For the face I mix less green with water in a bowl, and apply with a washcloth or paper towel. Eyebrows and the tiny hairs around your face will also absorb the green if your hair is light colored. So you might want to put lotion on them before hand. I like to paint my nails before getting green, it helps keep the green from sinking in.

Erekose taught me that rubbing chapstick into the pores on your nose helps keep the color out of them.

I use different color eyeliners and eyeshadows to bring out my inner gobbo. Black around the eyes, and black lipstick really adds to the evilness. Black hair gel to cover my humie haircolor.

Goblyns, don't forget to cover your elbows & knees ! They are goblyn errogenous zones !! Unless you're a shameless goblyn like Snotbelly.

The other weekend I tried using Ben Nye green makeup at the Utah Ren Faire. It took me 2 hours to get green !! And it rubbed off on everything, even after I set it with translucent powder. And it felt thick and icky. Still took me 2 showers and a long soak in a hot bath to get it all off. I will not be using that again.

I haven't tried acrylic paints, from what I've seen they tend to peel all nasty and make you look more like a rotting zombie.

IMO, Food coloring is the way to go. A nylon bath poof and soap get the green food coloring off really well. Apricot scrub for your face. Bring a mirror into the shower with you so you can tell when your face is clean. Or a buddy

Also, Orcs might want to add a bit of black food coloring to the green ?

If you're sweating enough to drip, the color will drip a little. But it stays on surprisingly well.

I almost forgot, Ben Nye LiquiSet in with the green helps a lot.

And after all the face paint is on, a spray of Final Seal is great

I don't think I've met you Cryn but I gotta hand it to you. Your makeup looks f'ing AMAZING. Of all the pictures and video clips I've seen of dagorhirrim all over the place, your costume stands out the most simply because of it's quality and creativity, and it's pretty damn inspiring!

I have to say that Cryn knows her stuff, the spray bottle method works really well.
You can see in the photo below that it only really bled where I was sweating the most, plus it was snowing so that didn't help the running nose. I wish I would have used the black spray hair color, it would have looked much better imo. Oh, and take a small sip of black food coloring, swish it around in your mouth a bit, and spit it out. Your tongue and mouth will be solid black, while your teeth look all gnarly. It's hella gre3nskyn. The amount of coloring you add determines your greeness. I had an almost Donatello green while Chupa was a more Michealangelo green. For the older folk who get that

I LOVE going green, it's a blast. We are all doing it this weekend for a medieval festival, I will let you know how well it holds up to heavy sweating!
