Need advice on finishing armor set.
« on: July 12, 2009, 05:07:48 pm »
Hello all,
I am looking for some options, or ideas to help me finish up my current armor set.

Here is what I have

1-chain shirt/coif
1-set spuladers ( need a groget or chest peice to strap them to )
1- Great Helm

Here is what I am looking for.

A chest peice to attach the spuladers to, but it need sto be 3/16 inch thick, as per these rules.
The chest does not need to be fancy, or very stylish, just a very basic, brown/black chest, with a rigging or strapping for a set of spualders.
But I would like every thing to match, or at least look like it matches.

Now the chest does not have to be leather, metal as long as the metal passes the rules, but I figured leather would be cheaper.

Next I would like a set of greaves/bracers/vambraces for my shins and forearms and would prefer them to match with everything else, but also 3/16 inch thick, to pass rules.

The main catch here is, This would all have to look nice one it is all done, and work with each other, most importnatly the helm.

So if I anyone has any ideas, or pictures, that would be great.

Sticking with the time period you mentioned before, I would recommend a coat of plates like the one that Hanzo posted a tutorial for recently (http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php?topic=12650.0).  It's appropriate for the period, especially with the spaulders and it's easy to make (I'm planning to make one myself some day).  For bracers and greaves it's up to you.   There were a lot of styles in use around that time from splinted to full metal.

well,
umm....

it ripped, alot, a whole lot.

But I think I can fix it, maybe, I hope.
I guess It just couldnt stand 1-3 hour sparing sessions almost every day, but its just butted, and I have some extra links around, so I am going to try and fix it, its 4 in 1 weave so I am guessing 2-3 days repair time knowing myself and how easily I get angry.

But yea, I attempt alot of stupid moves, and probly move it in ways it just cant handle, but on the bright side, I havelots of extra links.

So maybe destroyed isnt the right word, more like need about 3 hours of work, but I got it really cheep, and after I calmed down and thought about it, I probly have some where around 25-30 of wear on it.

Thinking about it now, I do believe I know what caused it, I think that I am to blame, and not the quality of the chain its self.

On my chain, I double up the links at stress points to reduce the amount of repair needed.  Really, the solution is to trash our crappy butted mail and get riveted  ;D

well yea, but my funding doesnt allow that.

but anyway, I am going to go with a leather Cuirass, attaching my shoulders to that, then a set of greaves and vrambraces in leather as well.
Should like nice.

I don't think that came across clear.  I meant I just put two links through instead of one at the corners which tear (bottom of the armpit, neckline).  You said you have extra links around so that should be doable for ya.

The leather and chain look can be really sweet, though.  Good luck.

Or make your own chainmail that'll hold together better than mass-produced Indian stuff.  I've never had to repair any of the rings in my chainmail, which uses butted 14 gauge 3/8" rings.   :P

fixed it today, and even got the helm I ordered in, looks very impressive!
but I will need a good liner in it before I can use it in a fight.
I will most likely relegate it show only, untill I can get a good liner in it.
Once I get a good liner in it, along with my chain and leather armor I will be covered ( besides knees and elbow ) in armor.
Once I get the liner made and get used to helm I will use it with a sheild.
