Topic: Bow dropping question? (Read 1294 times)

Hey all, I've had this question in my head for a few days now, and am just finally getting around to posting it.

Lets say you either A) had to get your bow hand open to get a back up weapon or B) one of your arms got limbed.

What would you do with your bow? If you had a bow-quiver (not an arrow quiver, basically a sheath for your bow.), would people care if you took the extra second to put your bow on your back, or would you have to drop it immediately and risk it getting broken/damaged?

The rules say drop what's in your hand. If you wish to guard your bow, and few would say you can't or shouldn't, you have the obligation to take the next shot as death in scenario no. 2 and in scenario no. 1, good luck. Other fighters are not bound to hold off attacking you just because you're not ready to fight them.

aye, you hafta drop it. but that should deal no damage to it. some might have enough honor to let u then pick it up and put it in it's sheath, but don't count on it.

Jettison it to your outside, letting it drop. Unless it's fragile, it'll be fine.

Another thing people do to either protect their items or to not lose them at large national events like Ragnarok is instead of dropping them, they put the weapon behind their back when they put their arm behind their back because of losing it.

In his first scenario, he wouldn't have that option, as he had a good arm and wished to switch to his backup weapon. I'd submit that if you wait til the enemy's upon you to do that, you have tarried too long.

Ah, even better, after recently reading a post about someone having their bow stolen at Rag.

If I get armed, I'll have to do that. For the backup weapon switch, I'll try to make myself a bow quiver out of some cardboard or something. (For trial purposes only). If I feel I get comfortable enough with throwing my bow in there quickly and drawing a sidearm, then I might invest in making or buying a better one.

Also, heres a question. Since I would hold my bow with my left hand and draw back with my right, suppose my right arm was limbed. If the person who limbed me was backing off, died from a teammate, or something else, then would it be alright for me to switch my bow over to my right hand quickly, then put it behind my back? Or is this frowned upon/not allowed?

That sounds like the specifically prohibited Magic Switch. The rules say drop it, folks will allow you to put it behind your back. I'd fight a few times and see what works for you.

Yeah, I'll be using a longbow for Dagorhir, so the ends won't be bad at all. Plus it would lie on my upper back, making my spine the middle point. If I were to bend any which way, the bow would stick out, and not poke me anyway. I'll take a look at the design I saw anyway.

And thanks for the warning on the "Magic Switch". Didn't even know about it. I'll have to do a little research. I could see how it would be illegal to do with melee and other 1h weapons, but since a bow needs two hands to shoot it anyway, I don't see anybody but a few sticklers having a problem with it. If it IS illegal, then I will refrain from doing it, but I'd rather not have to drop a nice bow and have it get damaged.

The only problem I have with putting extra weapons behind your back in your dead hand is that many people will then grab this extra weapon with their good hand and start fighting with it. If you want to hang onto your sword or bow so you don't lose it, just remember that your dead arm isn't a sheath.

I loved my bow, but I recognized and accepted the fact that if I took it on the battlefield, then I was putting it at risk. If I lost that arm the bow got dropped. Period. Even when we were fighting in the woods in rocky terrain.

And that bow survived. (I still have it.) They are tougher than many think. Personally I was more worried someone might be hurt falling on the hard bow limbs than the softer dirt, grass and leaves.

You have been asking a lot of questions about fighting that really answer themselves when you make it to a regular practice. A lot of what everyone is saying will make sense when you hit the field.

What an archer does with his/her bow really depends on the archer. Personally, I don't mind dropping it because I'm probably going to be dead soon anyways, so I can just "die" over my bow. In the event that I'm on the run and trying to defend myself, I'll drop my bow at a fighter I trust and yell "watch this for me" as I run past. That way, I don't risk having someone walk off with my bow.

Yeah, if I am forced to drop my bow during those weird times that I am arching, I normally snatch it with my other hand once it hits the ground than sling it over my back before backing off. I'll then normally play the "retrieve javvies/rocks and chuck them back" game, considering I now have a relatively pointy object on my back, or I will use a side-arm to engage flankers. Or I simply die on the subsequent hit and don't have to worry about it, which is more often the case.

though i still wouldnt switch it to my dead hand, this doesnt sound like the "Magic Switch" to me. I consider the Magic Switch when (ex) someone loses their sword arm, drops their shield and just hands over his sword to his good arm. To keep fighting. In that instance, he hadnt planned on fighting with the bow, just protecting it from being broken.

yeah it is a reverse magic switch putting your bow from your good hand into your dead arm and then behind your back i dont think anyone would have a problem with that

as far as simply switching to your backup weapon, i know a lot of archers dont agree with it, and dont like it at all, but i am less protective and more trusting in my bow and u can use it as a one hit shield from a red or blue strike, or simply deflect greens all day with it, so i would switch it to offhand and grab backup with primary and that way you have a better chance with getting out alive, you may get your bow broken, but then after you die or kill him you can put it on ur back and continue single blue/red/whatever else

like i said i am a little less protective of my bow and i am also not as experienced as many of theses fine gents, just puttin in my two cents worth
