Dogs of War II:Gnomeageddon
« on: February 28, 2010, 03:50:44 pm »
A powerful magic user enters the forest. "Yes." He says, "This could work nicely for my new domain." As he sets up shop he finds his evil deeds thwarted by an annoying tiny bearded people in pointed hats. He never saw them until battle ensued. Their tiny stature made them hard to hit. These forest guardians battled bravely but were too spread out to be effective. One by one they fell to his evil magic and became statues. The forest from the smallest insect to the tallest tree was unprotected. Laughing the evil magic user left each statue where it lay as a warning to others.

Will you try to save them or will you help destroy or be a nonplayer character (the monsters, fey, merchants, etc). You decide. Welcome to Dogs of War II: Gnomeageddon.

WHAT?  "Retro Dagorhir" Characterization Event!

WHERE?  Morgantown, WV

WHEN?  Memorial Day Weekend; the main Event will start at 10 AM on Sunday, May 30. Saturday the 29 will have day battles run by Drentha for those who live closer.
(This allows people coming from far away to travel to the event on Saturday, set up camp, get into character, fight and role play all day Sunday, feast and tell tales Sunday night, and drive home on Memorial Day Monday.)

DETAILS, DETAILS:

This *is* your grandfather's Dagorhir event: all participants will need to turn in a written character outline at the event, and all garb will be "veteran" level or better.  If you don't own such garb already, MAKE IT NOW!

This event will a focus on characterization and FUN!  Nobody will care which "team" wins anything, but awards and bragging rights will go to the players with the best characterization, garb, attitude, and stories to tell.

More Details to follow.

West Virginia again? A few hours north would make this doable.

Seriously though, this looks awesome and I hope we get something like this going soon in the Mid-West area.

It's currently in the planning stages Gorbag. It's gonna happen this year, possibly around late July or early August. :D We're trying to get it all together and looking for as much help as we can get from all the midwest realms

If this event is half as much fun as it was last year, it's going to be wonderful.

Our part of the campground is reserved for the whole weekend, so some of us are planning on getting there early and fighting on Saturday. These battles will be low-key field battles with plenty of opportunity to fight really hard and also to start getting into character for the next day's woods battle.

These battles aren't the main event - that comes Sunday when we go into the woods, get on our characters, and play Dagorhir old-school style. But they'll be a good way to get the blood pumping, for all of us who can get to the campground Friday night or early Saturday.

Potential nay-sayers and whiners that a 3 hour drive is "too far." Last year's DoW was easily the most fun I've ever had at a Dag event, including Rag.

What Taltosh said-- last year's Dogs was my favorite event ever. If there's any chance of you makin' it out, jump on it.

I mean, c'mon. Last year's Dogs featured an invisible pink bunny rabbit, inadvertent highwaymen, truces, alliances, gypsy-switching deception, a dragon!, and good clean fighting. Does it get much better?

If you have any questions or fears regarding finding the campsite get a hold of me I will give you my cell phone number and help to direct you if you become lost which you shouldn't.

The park has no physical address because its Wv and we don't need an address to find things :)

I'm considering ending my indefinite hiatus from Dag for this event.

I hope to have the new chain and/or plate/scale fit and finished by then, but we'll see.

Ya, I skipped last years event because I didn't have complete veteran level garb (which I found out later was more veteran level than required). I really wanna get in on it this year.

I'd dig this, the drive is a bit killer for me, though.

I hope there are pictures.

You can win a golden Gnomie or after the event I may be willing to sell the gnomes that survive. :)

If he's not up for fighting, there's a chance that Flora and Tobias (or whoever's running the NPCs and props) will need non-combat characters to flesh out the main scenario during the day-- last year we had wandering healers, fairies, and an invisible pink bunny. I think that literally no one was left in camp during the fighting, so he might want to reconsider!

(I know, way to not answer the question, Ilsa. :P)

Would this garb pass @ Dogs of War? I'm not sure if mine will because I wear a long sleeve shirt under my garb and all black shoes.

I passed your questions on to the other organiers, Warwick. Thanks for bringing it up-- I feel it would help the event if we all better understood what garb standards we're shooting for.

In the meantime, here's what the Aratari handbook depicts as vet level garb:

It might be a worthwhile endeavor for us all to critically look at our garb and ask if we're meeting (preferably, exceeding!) the basic standards for garb listed in the Manual of Arms. Are we all in tunics of crotch-length or longer, acceptable pants, and shoes that make an attempt to blend in? Those standards met, are we striving to go beyond the basics and add to the event through our kits?

Of course, I'd be in raptures if everyone showed up in 'realist' garb, whatever that means for your persona!:

We'll see how the others chime in. :)

Cover the mundane hem and the neckline and you should be fine. I can't imagine anybody being failed for a shoulder-seam if everything else looks good. You'd probably blend right in.

Last year I saw several people wearing garb like this. It all looked good, but pieces of it were mundane - though someone a hundred years ago wouldn't have known, someone familiar with Wal-Mart could tell pretty easily. :)

I always had the feeling that Dogs of War is about constant improvement, not status quo.  If the leaders of the event did allow something last year, it does not necessarily mean they will let it go this time around.

Rather than use a mundane shirt underneath, I would suggest going ahead and making a tunic instead.  This event is to help make Dagorhir a better and more "period" game.

I am not an organizer, of course, so I can not speak to what they will let slide or not.

I agree with Lykos, however, if only the sleeve is visible and you tuck the cuff into period-ish gloves, nothing mundane will be showing. In case the seams are showing and you don't want that, you could always apply some sort of cloth wrap to your upper arms/shoulders. While this is a very generic statement, and I'm sure Alric will quickly correct me and explain further ;D, I've often seen such wraps in very period and beautiful outfits.
