In my copious amounts of free time I'm weaving a basket for dance. Fun times will be had.

Underwater, I assume.  :D

A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, a group of guys came together and formed the Church of the High Cross, a group dedicated to preaching the wonders of the high cross to all would listen and practice such an amazing shot.

I'm bringin it back

my "rosary" for how many times I must high cross an opponent to repent of my stickjock ways

My warhammer inspired crucifix I bought

Just gotta get the two together now.

That's a cross. A crucifix is a depiction of Jesus on a cross.

That's a cross. A crucifix is a depiction of Jesus on a cross.
To be even more specific, that is an early cross the church adopted in areas that were highly populated by Pagans. The circle was added to make the cross more appealing to it's target audience. Or something like that, saw it on the history channel, so it could be a complete fabrication.

I always thought the circle had some sort of symbolic meaning. Dammit, now I'm going to have to look it up.

According to the wiki Celtic Cross article, what BH said is one hypothesis, and that the circle was added by St. Patrick either to equate the symbolic importance of the cross with that of the sun to pagans, or to demonstrate Christian dominance over pagan sun worship.

Just finished up two leather pouches for a LARP so that my lady and I can carry our character sheets in style.
First leather working I've ever done.
Things learned:
Dyeing stuff makes it look better.
Punch holes and rivet pieces before putting it together.
Cutting leather is really easy with a sharp knife, make sure to have fresh blades.
Pics will show up at some point I'm sure.

Got a free gator trailer from work. Its rusted as hell, and its wheels are missing, and two corners need reinforced...but its free, and none of that is something a little elbow grease and a trip to harbor freight can't cure.

Porto bar is coming together!

I'm searching for the right wool to make a new tent. We don't need it until Ragnarok, so I'm waiting until we can find the perfect color (and to hit a sale so we can get it for as close to $6/yd as possible!).

Getting ready for midterms, weaving a basket (still), cutting out the pieces for my coat mock up, making tassels for tent decorations, finalizing my spring break plans, and getting ready to make a viking three panel dress too. And I'm itching to make some more weapons.

Sleep is a myth.

Also, Alric, why are you making a tent out of wool rather than canvas? What's the benefits to that?

Also, Alric, why are you making a tent out of wool rather than canvas? What's the benefits to that?

Several thoughts were behind it the first time I tried two years ago. First, cotton canvas wasn't around in 11th century England, so I'd have to go with wool or linen/hemp. Hemp canvas is really expensive, though, and I couldn't afford it (while wool was on sale for $6/yd). And I couldn't find linen in a heavy enough weight to keep the rain out (12oz). So I went with wool.

But I also suspected (correctly) that wool would drape differently from cotton - less taught, a little more saggy. And that was the look of the tents in the Utrecht Psalter, on which I based my tent. And my wool tent did have the right saggy look when it was finished, which doesn't mean that the original had to be made from wool, but did mean that wool got me the look I was going for (in a way that cotton, which gets tighter instead of sagging when it's wet, didn't). Perhaps hemp canvas would have as well?

But the biggest selling points are more practical. Cotton mildews like crazy when it gets wet, and it's flammable. Wool doesn't mildew, and it's mildly flame resistant.

Interestingly, the tent doesn't seem to be noticeably warmer than cotton (kind of a bummer on those cold nights when you want to keep some heat in).

I mostly intend to keep using wool because of the cost (hemp canvas is still much more expensive, and I don't want to use not-period-for-Alric cotton) and the mildew resistance.

Yup! http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php?topic=18678.0

We're actually thinking about selling this to finance the purchase of fabric for a bigger one. When I made this I thought it would be big enough for two, but while it does work well for weekend events, we were pretty crowded at Rag - so it's time to upgrade!

It's kind of a mini-serger, as she called it, but it will definitely get my light work done on a couple tunics and pants. I think my current pants are about to come apart at the seams. (Bottom weight mixture)

Well here's been my week and what shall come in my week preparing for the first official practice in Mittelmarch before I go back to Stormhaven(Ball State):

  • First I had some maintenance to do:
    • I had to fix some tape on my Tanto, Wakizashi, and Katana
        • My Tanto:
          • Min Length/Weight blue/green
          • Curved
          • Single-Edged
        • My Wakizashi:
          • Medium Length blue/green
          • Curved
          • Single-Edged
        • My Katana:
          • Damn near maximum Length blue/green
          • Curved
          • Single-Edged
    • I then added a hilt to the same weapons from before that is Japanese-esque
      • It consisted of .5" strips of blue foam.
      • I put a strip all the way round, an inch from the grip, then a piece on the blade side and the back of the sword on top of the previous loop, then one more complete loop. Secured with strapping tape.
    • I added more padding to the tip of my javvie
  • I made frogs for my weapons using rope grommets.
  • I added incidental padding for my flail, and taped it up.
  • I made a Narnian Overkill Dagger
  • I made a big rock
  • I turned my xiphos, the sword which tip was torn on my bum during the video I made for class(youtube bokmeow and its the clip saying why ball state freshman should play dagorhir.) Into a longsword with a hilt(tearing apart only 2 layers off of a weapon is hard.)
  • I need to find a sewing machine so that I can finish my garb, I spent 3 hours sewing at my school and I didn't even finish my tunic....grrr.
  • I cut the foam for my min-red/green, now I need to put it together.
  • Friday I should be making my strap round shield which I have measured and calculated all the foam needs, since I am waffling it.

Rojji, check thrift stores for sewing machines. Bring a spool of thread and a few scraps of fabric with you and ask if you can test the machine out before you buy it.

I just bid on way way way too much linen yarn. It's all embroidery/weaving weight, and half of it is for my mother, but DEAR FREAKING LORD so much thread!! 24 skeins (colors) total.

Off to finish tonight's homework :/

Don't you children sleep anymore? Geeze!

The machine problem does sound like a timing issue. If it was my machine I would take it apart and fiddle with it. Since you were pulling on the fabric I'd check on the gears closest to the feed dog first.

I did miss the part where this was two years ago...

Well i tried to hide the problem then dad siad he'd fix it, and then I had no use for it so nobody bothered, then now well im bothering. So i dont know the names of the pieces, im not a sewer, someone just showed me how to pin, thread it, and that i need to back stitch. so is it that hard to fix it? what specifically could be wrong?

Timing should always be fixed by a professional sewing machine repair person.

Meh.. if no one's touched the machine in two years, why not try fixing it yourself? If it's an expensive machine, I suppose Stell is right, but otherwise google a comprehensive manual and go for it!
