I'm reading a book about unusual burials in early medieval England.

The author is talking about murder victims right now - over the years archaeologists have found several bodies, hidden in places like up against the walls of buildings that were being excavated, that were hastily buried and appear to have died from violent trauma to the head, probably murdered and then hidden. It's really sad that the murderers got away with it, but also kind of cool that, after so many years, the missing victims have finally been found again. Talk about cold cases.
Cool, which book is this?

Andrew Reynolds, Anglo-Saxon Deviant Burial Customs (2009).

Calling it Stygian pectoral armour.

snake design doesn't pop as much as i would like, so it goes.

First tooling attempt. lines are rough, but serviceable.

I like it.

so i was going to make myself a hood out of this shiny green fabric and i got excited cuz i have exactly the right amount, then I cut out both halves(minus the gussets) then I realized I cut two left halves....project ruined. NO!!!!! Now to try and make a black one out of scraps.... to hide my underarmor seen at the collar....#sadpandaface but I did finish my first tunic and pants, though I may want to reinforce the seams and I need to get black thread and re-do all visible seams but other than that...im pretty damn proud of me-self. Now on to footwear.

Planning for my first new shield in...probably 3 years or more.

Going to pick up some 2'x2' 1/4" plywood tomorrow, or in the next few days at least. We'll see how this goes. Once that's done, well shoot I might actually get to setting myself up with working weapons again.

Waiting on dinner to arrive, then some quick 4.0 tonight (test run, a friend of mine came over and offered to run a quick game.. if the last player shows up)

Also seeing how easy it'll be to get my ex-roommates Kindle switched into my name xD he just all of a sudden moved down to Mississippi again without picking up -any- of his stuff and told us to keep it all as payment for rent/reimbursing utilities/etc-whatever

Sooo.... I'll have a decent leather chest piece to bring to Rag to trade off for something baller. Bring your awesome for me to trade for!

My first test with tooling was successful so i went ahead and tried again with an arm protector for archery, wax hardened, with a simple snake design tooled into the surface.making the straps now.

also got halfway through making a new tunic.

Making my first heavy weapon. It's a 3lb, 5 foot long red/green axe with a custom fiberglass axe head core. I'm also trying to make the stabbing tip be the horn, like a real Danish axe. I really want to make it safe. I've got two more layers (marine foam) to put on before I test it. Hopefully it will be fine. Even with the two blue layers the medium hits I'm doing on my own leg seem to be fine, so that's a good sign.

[not yet finished axe]

Making my first heavy weapon. It's a 3lb, 5 foot long red/green axe with a custom fiberglass axe head core. I'm also trying to make the stabbing tip be the horn, like a real Danish axe. I really want to make it safe. I've got two more layers (marine foam) to put on before I test it. Hopefully it will be fine. Even with the two blue layers the medium hits I'm doing on my own leg seem to be fine, so that's a good sign.

[1] You're gonna want open-cell on that striking edge. Without it, the axe is gonna be straight-up solid, and will hit like a brick. My unit has a red axe just like that (almost exactly the same build: harbor freight mats + blue).

[2] I'm not sure how puffy your marine foam is (I'm assuming like a seat cushion?). If it is a seat cushion, you might want something a little... friendlier than that. If not, then disregard this.

I disagree. My 3lb 4.5' red axe has marine foam on the blade on top of the blue foam, a marine foam stabbing tip, and it hits fine. Open cell will just add extra bulk, at the cost of making the blade less stable and less durable. Marine foam / yoga mat's what you want.

Does the grey foam on that axe above equal the puzzle mat/4lb stuff people keep talking about using?  I thought so, and built a glaive using that exact same looking foam as the base layer for WAR in November, and disintegrated the foam on the top 10 inches of the weapon in less than half a day fighting.... :( I noticed my tip getting lopsided so I took off the cover and it fell out in chunks and dust.  Maybe I did something wrong?

Oh good, I was beginning to worry I'd have to do that. I bought the marine foam online, so it's good stuff that's new, and recommended by vets like Arrakis. I'm going to put on the two marine foam layers tonight.

Researching Etruscan bronze sculptures and religion practices, mostly in regards to their deity sculptures. Fun. Times.

Twins!

What do you know about the Culsans/Selvans pair from Cortona 300-250BCE? I'm not having much luck.

A whole lot of nothing. It's pretty maddening how little personally useful information I can find on this stuff. Right now I'm trying to write a paper about whether or not this sculpture is authentic or not.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Interesting-and-nice-Etruscan-bronze-large-statue-Female-Goddess-5th-century-BC-/330710699367?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cffe4cd67

My gut says no, but I can't prove it yet. It feels like all the scholars decided that Greek and later Roman art was more important, and thus got more attention. I really wish I had picked a better topic.

Thinking my dinner has settled long enough to go out in the garage and do some work on the machines. Then I've got to start seriously inventorying my stuff for Gates of Summer. /sigh

What books do you have? One of the profs in my department is a leading expert on Etr. art, I may be able to get some images for you.

I just finished reading Introduction to Etruscan Art by P J Riis and almost pulled my hair out. That man did not understand linear timelines at all.

I just started Etruscan Art by Otto J Brendel, and I have Master Pieces of Etruscan Art by R S Teitz, The Art of Etruria and Early Rome by G A Mansuelli, The Art of the Etruscans by  M Moretti and G Maetzke, and The Etruscans : Their History, Art, and Architecture by M Sprender and G Bartoloni lined up to read once I'm through Brendel's book.

Trying to come down from a fanboy high so I can go to sleep. I met Glen Keane earlier tonight. Autograph (with rough sketch of Beast from "Beauty and the Beast") and everything!

Try these:

Haynes, Sibyle. 2006. Etruscan Civilization: A cultural history. Los Angeles.

de Grummond, N. and Simon, E. 2006. Etruscan Religion. Austin.

Both recent, and both have a lot of archaeological content to them. There are also a good number of Italian volumes, if you can read Italian.

$230 of wool ordered - 32 yards. This feels crazy. New tent's gonna be roomy, though!

while it isn't without issues...using something like google translate can allow you an insight into foreign language texts. Especially if used with common sense and a critical eye.
