Been wanting to start legitimizing my status as a forester-type person, and I think a bedroll would be a good start. Also, hopefully less bulky than my current sleeping pad/pillow/sleeping bag.

So, what does it take to make a proper bedroll?

It all depends on what you want and how much your willing to carry. at the very least a thick blanket and a drop cloth. the easiest way to do it is fold/roll it up and tie tightly at one end so you have something that looks like this

We've had some bad luck with cotton canvas dropcloths (and, okay, tents) mildewing to heck. Sunforger Canvas is allegedly good stuff-- treated to be water- and mildew-resistant. Seems like it might be hard-ish to find in anything less that bolts, thought?

Wool might resist mold and stuff a bit better(look at this side-by-side comparison!).

Yeah, prolly just as quick and easy to gather all the necessary yardage/leather yourself. cheaper, too.

I don't think Sunforger is the proper material for this sort of thing. It's coated fabric. As in, it looks and feels like canvas that's been primed for painting, but still flexible. Great for tents. Not so good for something you plan to sleep in.

I'd just get a large wool blanket (big enough to roll up in) and find a comfy pile of leaves to sleep in.

yup there is truth in that statement and **** rolling up in a pile of leaves you still want something in between you an the ground and the leaves just rolling up like a wool burrito doesn't cut it

right now my primitive bed rool is a shell of canvas. a wool blanket bag and a bag of modern felt. it worked well at our last service project. we doing streambank restoration during the day. and it got bitter cold at night. not as warm as i wouldbe with a modern bag and pad. but not terrible.

I second what Whisper was saying. make yourself a good ground bed of dead leaves or grasses before you bed down. you loose a lot more heat to the ground than you do to the air. so insulate yourself from the ground and youll be much warmer.

until you get the bedroll made, why not stop bringing your pillow with your sleeping pad and bag to save space/things to carry?  i never camp with a pillow and i never miss it.  at home i sleep with a pillow as often as not.
if you always sleep with a pillow, suddenly trying to sleep without one in your bedroll will be really uncomfortable, it's something you have to get used to a bit.

Worth a shot. My pillow is really thin, and is really more of an excuse to have something (a pillowcase) to put my pad and stuffsack in to have all my bedding in one package.

My first event I slept under a tree in my cloak.

It gets cold at night in PA.

the axe is a modified cold steel poleaxe. i think its been discontinued. i can get you better pictures of it if that would help.

I'd advise against "roughing it" by choice. going without shelter in an emergency is one thing. not saying you need a tent and bedroll and a pad and so on. but going out unprepared is not a good idea. bring what you need based on your ablility and your climate. If your in a warm area or you can sleep close to a fire you might be able to get by with just a cloak or garb. Resist the urge to badass it .

Also,

youll have to dry out your canvas after using it, especially outside without a tent. if you put it away wet youll get mold and mildew.

I'm not ecouraging roughing it, I simply wanted to know if he knew what roughing it felt like. I'll try to get a picture of my bedroll setup.

My first event I 'camped', I was with the Templar this past Badon Hill (you saw me there, Tycho) and I slept without a blanket in nothing but my armor in that cold. That, was fun.

I have a pretty light modern fleece sleeping bag, would that do well for a core, like your modern felt?

itll work for starters. get yourself a wool surplus blanket. you can get them for about 20 bucks at an army surplus store.
