Punch & Pie
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:39:03 pm »
Hi, another quick question.  I seen a style at an event where a guy was using a min red sword and a punch shield.  We were on a bridge and he was doing quite well.  He called it " punch and pie".  I was wondering if anyone else out there does this?  and if so, would you mind elaborating on how you do it/ thoughts/ tips for this style of fighting?

I've done a little punch n pie, but I really just stole the idea from Tiji of DA (or more recently, Arky of HH).  Basically, people mistake your sword for a blue and you surprise them with your range. Then, once they figured out your "gimmick" they get sloppy and think they can just rush you. When they do that, you can

A) drop the shield and red them
B) shield kick them and either red or wrap
C)  just keep fighting like you have a long blue

Punch n pie on a bridge is nice because you have a long range, while also being able to block arrows/javs/spears that would usually pose a greater threat to a simple red-wielder. However, when it's time to do work, you can drop the shield (or if you have it rigged, sling it on your back) and surprise people with some devastating red hacks. Repeat as necessary.

In the open field, you can play around with it alot. It's alot of fun when you're working with a squad because you have enormous reach with the added psycological benefit of your opponent knowing that any moment you could switch to red mode.

Ahhh, Punch & Pie....

I built myself an UBER min red for this. 49", 25 1/4 oz. Balanced SOOO sweetly.
I learned a lot from Arke about this. Aiden got the basics out, that's the base to start from. The only thing I would add would be going from a high stance, drop the weapon quickly and go for a low leg sweep but not too low so as not to hit someone's feet. It works really well when you fake for a high shot/wrap and just drop and swing the sword under them.
Hard to explain really, but it works well. I will see if I can find a vid of this.

I've done a variant on this with a minimum red (just over 48" and 24 oz. and very nicely balanced) and a 24" blue short sword. I use it as rapier and dagger - it's just that the rapier has a really long grip. It's fun enough that I often just stick with that. However, it's nice to have the option to drop the blue and start hewing mightily. :)

I like rolling this way too Whisper. Sometimes I will use the red down sword and use a lot of low sweeping attacks and straight stabs all the while throwing blisteringly fast shots with the blue.

Ahhh, I  love me some red fighting :D

Sword & Board
Ball & Wall
Punch & Pie
Rock & Block
Grab & Guard
Fence & Fend
Dam & Dagger
Dart & Defend
Bow & Buckler

I think that covers it all, really.

I fight 2 handed axe and shield, I try to leg them then drop the shield and break theirs only to pick up the shield again after I get theirs. Works decently well.

Sword & Board - Sword and shield
Ball & Wall - Flail with tower shield
Punch & Pie - Minimum red sword with a hand shield
Rock & Block - Rock and... something?
Grab & Guard - No idea. Some kind of grappling thing, maybe?
Fence & Fend - No idea
Dam & Dagger - Dagger and... something? Buckler?
Dart & Defend - As a wild guess, maybe it's javelin and shield?
Bow & Buckler - Bow with a small shield strapped to the arm

Fence & Fend: Spear and shield. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed the similarities between a spear duel (before the grappling) and a fencing bout.

Rock & Block: Rock and shield.

Grab & Guard: No weapon, just a shield and looking to grapple.

The point of my post was mostly just joking around trying to come up with alliterations for all the possible things you could do with a weapon + shield combo. Only a few are official jargon. Stugos's "Alliteration at any cost' inspired me.

I just want to teach them right so nothing is ambigous or confusing. I been teaching everyone the rules since alot on the first day just were wacking everyone in the face and nuts.

Well, I wouldn't mind one or two of the ones I made up getting some official use  ;) (fyi, ball & wall, sword & board, punch & pie are the only ones I know I didn't coin).
