Code of Conduct Defined

(1/1)

Sir Magnus of Narnia:
Cleaned this up. Many thanks to everyone who chipped in on the first run of this post. Comments are still welcome.

Thanks.

Code of Conduct Defined:

Dagorhir is a game that requires the sportsmanship and the good conduct of the participants in order to function properly. Players have rules to follow, but at many events enforcement of these rules is difficult because of limited volunteers or just the size of the event. At larger events players are often drawn together from different areas with vastly different local customs and accepted behavior. Players are called up not only to police themselves, but look out for other players. The rules can only cover so much, and there are numerous concepts and terms that get tossed around when conflicts or debates arise. Very often disputes arise or escalate from a simple misunderstanding of these terms. The following is a simple break down of common terms used to describe rules and conduct in Dagorhir. This is not a system of enforcement.

Types of rules:

Written rules: These are the written rules of the game. This includes the manual of arms, but also includes any written rules provided by event staff, chapter, etc.

Unwritten rules: (I think some people might define these as social mores, but I am no sociologist). These are customs, practices, standards, and values not defined by written rules, but are accepted as “rules” because they are agreed upon by the public. Some unwritten rules are accepted by Dagorhir as a whole, other are restricted to certain chapter, areas, or groups.

Spirit of the rules: Describes accepted standards that are not defined by the written rules, but are accepted as correct because they are within in the intended concept of the rules.

Code of Conduct terms:

Cheating: The player willingly attempts to break or ignore a written rule, or makes no attempt to learn the written rules of the game.

Cheese (or cheesy): Cheese describes things that other players find cheap, inferior, or in bad form. Including but not limited to weapons, armor, tactics, and so on. Cheese is often use to describe min-max and loop holing, but is unique in the fact that this bias is often local to a group, chapter, or individual. For example in one area of the country maximum sized shields are common place, while in another area they are considered cheesy. Cheese is not a direct violation of the rules or cheating.

Disrespect: Any action (verbal, physical, or implied) that is knowingly disrespectful to fellow players. This can include players, spectators, event staff, site owners, and so on. This can include violation of unwritten rules when the violator is aware of the rule they are breaking.

Loop holing: Using ambiguous or poorly written rules to find “holes” in the system that the player then uses to their advantage.

Min-Max: Equipment, armor, and garb that are within the written rules of the game, but are right on the edge of legal system minimums or maximums.

New Player Predators: Players that willingly take advantage of, abuse, or otherwise disrupt the fun of new players.

Rule violation: An unknowing violation of the rules caused by ignorance of a certain rule, lack of experience, or confusion. Players who refuse to learn the details of a rule after unknowingly violating it are then cheating. Personally I feel violations of unwritten rules and spirit of the rules must fall in this category because it is difficult to prove a person is breaking a rule when they cannot reference it. If after violating the rule they continue to violate, I would consider this cheating.

Volkaras Valance:
Thanks for this, currently trying to incorporate a code of conduct for my chapter.
Our biggest offenders are hot heads and baseball swingers.
We have a few newb predators but they mostly stay in check.
Id say our current big issue is people bringing their outside drama onto the field and getting into bickering matches or even physically harming those they are upset with for nonDag related issues.
Any advice you have would be great! I only have a day and a half to write it up lol

Sir Magnus of Narnia:
Thanks! No problem. I don't really post here unless needed, but if you have questions feel free to PM me or better yet hit me up on face book.
