Mo' better linen: Fabric Mart's couture linen for $7-ish/yard. While this isn't the best linen deal ever, this particular stuff is some of the nicest, smoothest linen I've ever seen. Fairly lightweight, but not at all sheer. Tighter weave than Fabrics-stores's 5.3 oz. Colors, however, are MUCH brighter than they look online, so be warned.

...fabric! :)

Would this be good to shell a caftan in, or should I look for something heavier?

I think I'd go for something heavier for a caftan-- 7 oz or higher for linen. I don't think this stuff would quite hang in a coat-like manner.

Oh hey, yeah, a link is helpful. :P

I didn't end up buying any this time: everything they had in stock looked a bit too bright for my tastes. Alas, it's lovely linen.

I wish they had more toned down colors like fabric.com lol, all of their colors are kind of bright. Still on the look out for a cowl and cloak material for the winter/spring/fall weather.

It's short notice, but Joann has their 'Sew Classic' linen, normally an outrageous $14.95-ish/yard, available for $7.49 until Saturday. But wait, there's more! Print out a 20% off your total order coupon (different from their normal coupons: they'll let you use this on sale item) and you can get decently nice linen for $5.99/yard before tax. Pretty good for brick-and-mortar!

Their linen-rayons are really nice for blends, and the $3.60 they cost on sale is nothing to sneeze at.

All their thread was 50% off too, so with my coupon, I could get nicer brands for about the same cost as the cheap crap Walmart sells.

Hooray!

Good luck! It's not the best-ever price for linen I've ever seen, but it's nice to not have to pay for shipping, and it definitely helped me stock a few colors Tailored Tunics' inventory was missing. :)

Saw their sew classics are also on sale online too! (with the same selection as my local store has + a couple extras). Their ivory/natural are really nice in person, I used the green/purple combo on my garb. Going to get some of the ivory/natural/potting soil.

$7 for shipping.

I'm sure you're all sick of hearing about Shetland wool, but just one more thing:

Fabric Mart put a couple different colors (or colors I hadn't before noticed?) of Shetland wool on sale for $9.99/yard, too! There are some pretty heathered colors, a couple of nice whites (that would probably take dye well), and some respectable, don't-make-me-want-to-go-on-an-eye-gouging-spree plaids.

Want an awesome tunic made for you out of this wool, or out of these? Starting at $50, Tailored Tunics can make it happen! Hit me up through Tailored Tunics's order page for more details.

I'm trying to stock a bit of every color, but if you want your fabric guaranteed, get in contact with me by the 30th-- looks like that's when the sale is ending!

I'm not sure if anyone has seen this yet...mainly because I didn't want to read all three pages of this thread.

Found this site today. Its got a lot of blends in it, but it also has some really nice 100% wools for consistently cheap prices.

Fabric Mart's Shetland wool is now just $7.99/yard!

I'm crabby about it (I stocked up before the sale, ack! :P), but there's no reason why you should be anything but delighted!

Remember to use the code 'NEW' for another 20% off if this is your first order!

I've bought some of almost every color, and they are all very pretty.

To add insult to injury (because this always happens right when I've already bought all the fabric I want!), Fabric Mart is having a 25% off EVERYTHING sale on Black Friday.

There are some good cheap wools and linens floating around: you could get this wool for about $5.50/yard (nylon's often included to make the wool keep its shape better, so I didn't sweat the 10% blended in), or this gorgeous, lightest-I've-ever-seen, I-totally-thought-they-had-sent-me-a-synthetic-it's-so-fine linen for $6.75, or all of their remaining Shetland for $7.49/yard, or holy crap, silks!

So! Excellent fabric doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg, despite what Joann wants you to think. :D

Holy crap, guys, wool suiting for $5/yard!

(This is good stuff, but it's suiting, remember. Thin and slinky, like fancy man-pants, not warm and fluffy. Still definitely worth your monies!)

Would that wool suiting work for a lightweight summer/spring cloak?

It would be a good billow-y sort of cloak, but it wouldn't be great at keeping you warm (though it's definitely warmer than the equivalent weight of, say, cotton). It's about the same thickness as a pair of polyester dress slacks. If you want something dramatic but don't care much about warmth, this would work, but if you want warm, FabricMartFabric.com's Shetland is the way to go.

I would prefer it as a summer tunic rather than a summer cloak. I find that, even at Rag, I want my cloak to work like a light jacket (for the chilly nights), and this wool is more of a shirt and trousers weight.

I made Jari's new kilt out of wool suiting. I kinda panicked at first when the fabric arrived because it was SO THIN....but I washed it and dried it on hot and it fulled up just enough to have at least satisfactory body. It didn't stay shiny, either.

Sorry, Tarburz - I didn't see this until now!
Of the 6 yards, I think it shrunk maybe a half yard? It wasn't too bad, using the lighter weight suiting.
The best way to determine is to cut a 6" square off of a corner. Wash it in a load of clothes at the temp you want to use, dry it, and see how much it shrunk in length and width (the shrinkage rate is usually different.)

HEY GUYS. No, really, this merits capital letters.

Fabric.com is reducing their inventory-- this means MEGA sales. Like, wool suiting and wool MELTON for $4/yard. $3.31/yard if you're awesome like me and remember to Google a coupon. Ordering more than $35 gets you free shipping.

Go here to get yours!

As always, some are synthetic blends, so make sure it says that each individual fabric you order is 100% wool. I don't think that the crepes or gabardines look quite right for garb, but the normal twills and suitings are great. I like the 'clay' color, which I've ordered before, in particular. Some wash up to be fluffy, some won't. It varies. I've ordered a LOT of fabric.com wool, so if you need advice on a particular fabric, I might be able to offer some help.

Things are liable to go fast. You should order fabric now.

Nice garb! Good fabric! Doesn't have to be expensive if you wait and strike at the right moment! :)

Melton is the really heavy coat weight wool. It's like a blanket - very heavy - and it will keep you WARM!

I will now go sob quietly in the emo corner because I'm too broke to take advantage of this. If you are not too broke - BUY ALL THE WOOL! This kind of price on suiting and melton DOES NOT HAPPEN.

I have some of the ecru herringbone stripe, and some of the brushed brown/sage plaid. Both are VERY nice fabrics. The plaid is a perfect kilt weight, and the herringbone is so pretty and subtle. It's going to make excellent layering tunics/dresses!

Melton is the winter stuff! Fabric.com melton is what my wonderful green coat is made out of. Excellent fabric.

Was your herringbone a smooth worsted, Stell, or does it have any tooth? I've gotten both sorts from fabric.com herringbone this year, and I'm hoping that the blue/green herringbone will prove right for winnigas.

And just for general knowledge, if you buy $75 worth of items from Fabric.com and enter the coupon code PLTRY114 when you check out you get $20 dollars off :) which would bring down the price of the wool suiting to about $2.80. Get a bunch of people together and make a group purchase?

Before I washed it, it was quite smooth. I think it would be a bit thin for winingas, though. It's about the thickness of a cheap cotton flannel now that it's been washed. Not really thick, and kinda fuzzy.

Just two linens going cheap today at Fabric.com:

Dusty Blue

Autumn Green

Both described as 'medium/heavyweight.' I haven't bought either color and can't vouch for them, but the price is pretty good. Suspect this means that summer linens will be trickling into Fabric.com soon.

That blue would make a nice, nice tunic.

Couple bits of linen on sale at Fabric.com. The prices aren't remarkable, but getting the European linen at $9.91/yard (presuming you have a 15% off coupon) is a great deal, especially when you consider that after shipping, Fabrics-store.com charges about the same. The medium-weight European stuff is good quality.

I haven't tried the Pennington stuff, but at $6.78/yard (assuming coupon, again), it might be worth a shot. Buy some and report back to the masses? :P It looks a bit slubby and home-decor-ish to me.

Fabric Mart continues to push their Shetland wool, which is now as low as $8/yard. This stuff is a good choice for a three-season cloak or a winter-weight tunic.

Found any good fabric deals lately?

Ilsa, the shetland wool says it is perfect for rughooking. What is that?

That's when you cut wool into really skinny strips (like 1/4" wide or less) and use a hook to pull little bits of the strip through a backing of burlap to make little loops. The loops form the pile of the rug, and you create patterns on the rug by hooking the strips through in lines and shapes.

A person over on the armour archive is selling irregular white linen (occasional small brown spots) for $4 per yard (54-56in wide) and some blue linen for $4 per yard as well.

Yep! You can still use the ilovelinen code for an additional discount.  Definitely worth it- the 7.1 oz is probably my most used linen.  It's great for pants, outerwear, heavier tunics, etc.

This is true.  I made a pair of hakama out of that stuff once and they've lasted years of bring ground into the dirt.
