So, I'm in love with the NHL re-alignment plan.

For those not familiar:

Conferences are eliminated. Teams are sorted into four divisions:

Divisions (Named for history):
Norris:
Detroit
Winnipeg
Chicago
St. Louis
Minnesota
Dallas
Nashville
Columbus

Patrick:
Philadephia
Pittsburgh
Washington
N.Y. Islanders
N.Y. Rangers
Carolina
New Jersey

Smythe:
Los Angeles
San Jose
Calgary
Anaheim
Vancouver
Edmonton
Colorado
Phoenix

Adams:
Montreal
Toronto
Ottawa
Boston
Florida
Buffalo
Tampa Bay

Schedule: 5-6 games against each team in division, home and home with everyone else.

Playoffs: Top 4 from each division. Two rounds of division playoffs, re-seed for semi-finals with divisional playoff champions.

I like it too - it gives me more games to see Detroit in St. Louis! :D Plus guaranteed games in Dallas, Colorado, Chicago, or Minneapolis (if I'm feeling adventurous!)

Plus only ONE trip west until the playoffs at the earliest? Yes please!

Also - anyone with an over/under for Tootoo's hit on Miller? He's got a reputation, and after the non-suspension on Lucic I see him getting somewhere between 6-8 games. 10 if Shanny feels pressured to make a decision.

And no playoff West Coast trips until the Stanley Cup Semi-finals at the earliest.

Decision tonight my friends!

http://eye-on-hockey.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/27694626/33719669

Versus also was commenting that they'd have full details after the Chicago/Phoenix game; or perhaps in the intermission in the next 3 minutes.

The top four teams in each conference qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. The first-place team would play the fourth-place team; the second-place team would play the third-place team. The four respective conference champions would meet in the third round of the playoffs, with survivors playing for the Stanley Cup.

If I understand correctly, I don't think I like playoff style.

I would rather see 1v8 seed from the east/west rather than 1v4 per conf. - pre semi's. (If that makes sense, it does in my head)

I dunno, I kinda dig this style. Yeah we're pretty much guaranteed to see the same folks every year in the first & second rounds - but the prospect of a Vancouver vs Detroit final or a Toronto vs Pittsburgh final.. you can't tell me it wouldn't be exciting to see some of those east/east finals or west/west finals.

Poor Florida teams got the shaft though yo...  sucks for them like mad.

This brings the NHL back to its roots and creates rivalry matchups in the early rounds and allows any two teams from different divisions to match-up in the Finals.

2 games for Tootoo's hit on Miller.

Hate when the Wings play St. Louis; Pang is such a douche with his color commentary.

I don't know what you're talkin' about Princess. My team of old bastards is doing just fine, thanks  8)

If we wax you tonight like we did Phoenix and Winnipeg.. expect a scathing taunting text message by the second period :D

But then I'll cry a little on the inside because I have MAF as my fantasy goalie... but hopefully Brian Elliot can make up for it.

The Capitals have started playing well for 2 games in a row.  Now we get Philly in DC tonight on a 5 game win streak, but, Pronger and Giroux both are out with concussions.  So there's that.

And Shea Weber is beastly. I'd take him in Detroit in a heartbeat.

It's not Crosby's fault, but I keep getting more frustrated that Bettman saddled the entirety of NHL marketing on Crosby for so long. All your eggs in a basket is the wrong way to do anything.

I concur. That's not good business sense no matter what you do.

Fuuuuuu having MAF on my fantasy team. Turbo got me a whopping 1.6 points tonight xD

Also negs to Root Sports for going to commercial and coming back all "Yeah so... Franzen just scored on the powerplay" and I missed the WHOLE THING!  >:(

This brings the NHL back to its roots and creates rivalry matchups in the early rounds and allows any two teams from different divisions to match-up in the Finals.

Wah....fewer Detroit-Colorado games.  :'(

Who cares? Colorado has been such a non-entity for long enough that I consider that rivalry all but dead. Any more, the Wings just kick them around.

There is no more east-west.

During the Wings last road trip out there, it seemed like there were more Wings fans in the arena than Avs fans.

Truth - I heard a distinct "Lets Go Wings" chant through the tv :P

Pretty much the only thing that made the fans show any emotion was when Bertuzzi touched the puck xD

That's the best part.  ;D

It's more of a nostalgic thing for me. Hopefully in the future the games become closer matches than they have been recently.

I don't know about you, but I'm more nostalgic for the Wings-Leafs rivalry.

I remain convinced that the dumbest cheer in hockey is chanting the opposing goalie's name after any goal is scored. If it's some ridiculous from mid-ice shot that he just flubbed, sure. But crowds will chant it after their team scores on a 3 on none breakaway.

If I was the NHL, I'd just preemptively suspend Avery for this:

No, because I can honestly see Avery doing that. He's the most innovative ******* since Bart Simpson.

Wow - bitter much Canada? I mean, I understand a little cultural bias (clearly, if Canada's reporting on their loss) but that's ridiculous. It looks like it was some angry hockey mom or dad that wrote it after their goalie of a son got spanked by the Russians.

That was such a bitchin' save.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=610343

Too bad the realignment has been stopped by the NHLPA. Hopefully this is just to get some leverage going into the CBA talks after next season... because I was really diggin' the realignment that popped up.

Supposedly it's to save on travel. They should talk to the Jets and Western Conference Central Division about travel.
