I feel like I just traveled to my motherland and breathed her fresh air for the first time.

That was the most amazing video.

I understand what some of the veterans have said about how the game has changed, now. While I like the faster fighting of a field battle with instant resurrection, when I look at the roleplay in that video I feel like we've lost something. Let's bring it back!

And now we can look back and see what Dagorhir evolved from.

I think the dive Shrike took made him land on the dagger he had at his belt. I would prefer for him to cause accidental suicide before getting killed by the host.

and my bet is on that the host didnt survive the last few minutes

Was this more or less an actual scenario or something staged for the camera?

The shot from the tree and the subsequent shot from Graymael shooting me out of the tree was real. The camera man did not get it 'cause it happened so fast. After, It took gray 10 takes to get the shot right so the cameraman could get it on film. The kill of shrike was staged. the rest was not staged. the people pretending to be new where the 1st orks and were vets. The unit names where changed to protect the innocent.

I completely agree with you. I think a little more role-play could be a lot of fun. I'm not really much of a fighter but it is fun to get in to character and get to be a part of the action a little more.

This video was so beautiful. It was certainly, as Athron so eloquently put it, a breath of fresh air from the motherland. My dear sister, Princess Celeste was watching it with me and we both nearly started weeping like a couple of girls. (Well, we are a couple of girls, but you get the point.) This was a really great piece. The reporter seemed like he was really in to it and I feel like this news story took Dagorhir seriously, which is awesome.

The old tech weapons were so funny!! Some of them looked more like ice cream bars, where today's weapons look like popsicles.

Thank you, Blackhawk for posting this. It must be so cool, as one of the founding members of Dagorhir to watch it grow and evolve over the years.

Wow, brings it all back.  That tv spot got me and my brother Steve out to a battle at the Rockville Civic Center back in 1982 and they allowed us to fight one-time because we were too young.  We had a blast but we were too young to drive so we shelved Dagorhir until some local Dagorhirim recruited us from the highschool D&D club about a year later and I could drive.

We went to their sporadic Sunday practices all Fall and Spring and went to our next Dagorhir battle (with our own crappy garb and a blue sword apiece) in April 1984.  The rest is history...

Where did you find that?!?!  Spectacular!  LOL

Thats was some pretty solid coverage I should say!  Soundtrack, good editing, the whole nine-yards.  That reporter seemed to be a good sport of it all too.

If I recall, my scene with the host was one of the first shot at the battle site (Lake Frank.)  I think he wasn't yet convinced that he was actually supposed to HIT people.

(Personally, I've convinced myself that I snapped my neck on a particularly solid clump of icy snow.
...or something.

Dagger at my belt? Yah, that was it!)

The last battle scene was a collection of footage from some battling at the end of the day. By that time the host had figured out that whole 'hitting people' thing, and seemed to be having a genuinely good time mixing it up.

I second this. Just look at how much fun EVERYONE has dying in this video. I kinda like the part where the host says "you have to really ham it up, which means screaming and falling to the ground if you are hit in the torso." It was a given back then that you would act out your death.

Ave Tugig for posting the video, and Ave Blackhawk for pestering Tugig until he did it!

For my birthday last year, Hadrian gave me all the old Dagorhir videos from his collection, on VHS and DVD.  (NOTE: The VHS ones are copied from Betamax, so the DVD ones are actually third-generation copies.  If someone has a working Beta player, we could dupe direct from Beta to DVD for cleaner rez.)

Blackhawk and I were watching some of these old vids one night, and he pointed to a battle from 1984 where the bodies were piled on the field at the end of the fight, and said, "You never see THAT any more."

It's sad that he's right.  Too many people think "dying" means "stop fighting and put your sword above your head."

But Alric is right!  The way to get more people roleplaying is to fight and die with style.  When the new players see the old Vets acting like that, most will emulate it.

-- Graymael's Boots

PS: The PM Magazine Video recruited so many of my favorite people into Dagorhir.  Not just Guntar, but Hadrian, Dominus, Aries...and ultimately Dagorhir Middle Earth (when they showed that program nationally).

Don't forget to ham it up when you're wounded! It can also be lots of fun to favor an arm or leg or press a hand against a torso cut when you take a really light hit.

That was amazing... 1982 Dag looks like alot more fun than most of the fighting I've been involved in (no offense or anything, I'm just a fan of the CTF/woods scenarios)

Was every battle like that? It reminds me of crossroads ;]

A bad set of dice meant that sometimes you stayed dead for a half an hour. It made a big difference in game play when the guy you kill isn't back in your face after 30 seconds.

That would make res battles so different. Booooring for most but more tactical.

Oh and how cool would it be to go back in time with the modern dag weapons and skills?

Imagine handing a guy used to that huge duct tape sword a 12 ounce beat stick. I shudder to think how the new dag would adapt to heavy weapons, or real swords for that matter.

IIRC, most battles back then were woods battles. We'd have 2 or 3 field battles a year, but mostly we did some variation on the woods/CTF theme. Good times.

Oh and how cool would it be to go back in time with the modern dag weapons and skills?

First you would have to get past the insane cackling at you as you tried to pass off taps as hits. Then you would find yourself wondering why you are in the hospital having your wrist reconstructed after a 30oz weapon rips your punch shield out of your hand. The skill was there bro, it was there.
It took way more skill back then than it does now.

Wow....Just when you start winning me over you have to shoot yourself in the foot...

Time to start over again.

I think he won the rest of us over. He may have shot himself in the foot but you just figuratively hanged yourself!

I would love to go back and fight when stuff had some more realism and brains to it than it does now. A world devoid of 12oz. 40" swords and the "huff and puff walk away" deaths that are so frickin common. Lets bring it back

It was becoming way to cordial anyway. I have way too much fun disagreeing with you. As someone who has fought in both times with both types of weapons. I can assure you, it takes allot more skill and effort to use a 30oz 30" weapon than a 12oz 30" beat stick. Granted the speed of the beat stick would give the past fighter tons of trouble, however the learning curve and adjustment to a lighter weapon is much easier than its reverse. Handing a current fighter a 30oz weapon would cripple their abilities, and remove 90% of their shot arsenal.

I'm not even going to argue this point. You guys are welcome to talk about how awesome using a whole couches worth of foam(thanks calean) on a piece of 1 inch pvc pipe and covering it in duct tape is though.

more skill or just a different kind of skill?

I've fought some vets who are much more precision oriented and do very well, I always kind of figured it stemmed from the ancient heavy weapons of yore, but then you go up against some of the younger guys (myself included) who are much more rash but are very, very quick and combo up a lot faster (though far less precise in the majority).

I dunno if one or the other is better or harder, just different really.

Blue foam? What blue foam? It was mostly open cell and duct tape in those days, with a few cases of Ensolite (may it rest in pieces). And PVC was only starting to be used. I think there's one PVC weapon in that show. Mostly it was closet rods, with a few sawed-off hockey sticks. Bodies flew, else they were tent-pegged, and legends were born and evolved into strange and terrible forms.

Hehehe! I remember when I first went out to play with the SCA. I had to unlearn the screaming, bloody death bit because every time I died, the marshalls would yell "Hold!" and people would come running to make sure I was OK.

Well sad sir. I totally agree. It is a different kind of skill. I can pick a freckle on your elbow and hit it. But I am not nearly as fast as the new fighters with the barrage of lightning shots that rain down on me on occasion from you whippersnappers. It has become a daunting task for me to learn to block them, while looking for that brief opening that will allow me to get a shot in. The better fighters usually fire off 5 shots on me, to my one. But my one, finds its mark more often than not. I love the skill level of your guys and the uberlight weapons and shields. I know It has made me a much better fighter. My shieldwork is far superior to what it was back then.

I, for one, am trying my best to learn how to die better. It's hard to do in things like a bridge battle or an insanely-fast res fight, but I'm getting better at making sure I throw that extra bit of spice into things. I die quite often, so I should have no problem perfecting this before long, lol.
