Rag Questions
« on: January 15, 2012, 11:11:27 pm »
This is my first rag and all and I have a few questions (yes it's early but I'm planning and budgeting now)

My girlfriend is coming with me but she isn't into dagorhir she is just coming for support and all does she have to garb up everyday?

Also if I camp in Merc Row is there a space limit for people or is just wherever people put their tents up at?

I'd encourage your girlfriend to garb up. While there could be some rousing debate as to whether she's required to do so if she's not fighting, the main reason I'll offer is a social one. If she's the only person around who's not in garb, she's going to feel really awkward for most of the time she's there. If you're concerned about making a bunch of garb for what amounts to a one-shot event for her, just make yourself a few extra tunics and an extra belt, and let her wear them all week. It's all win - she's garbed and non-awkward, you have extra garb for the long term, and maybe she has a fun time and gets hooked.

If she plans on leaving camp at all, yes she does.  It doesn't have to be fantastic.  Basic skirts, pants and tunics will be fine as long as they don't look modern or out of place.

so even if the GF is there for support, she SHOULD (like really REALLY SHOULD) garb up each day.  2) if you are with the rable that is Merc Row (welcome by the way to The Row), then YES, if you PRE-REG state you are with Merc Row, and when you get there, you ID your turf.  ANything else?

Mercs row last year was kinda first come first serve on space, but the biggest thing is pretty much like this; Are you one person with a 15 by 15 foot tent? Get a smaller tent. There IS a finite amount of space, and when you do take a space, try to make sure you're using space properly. As in, use as little of it as you can.

Whisper's right as usual; she'll feel more uncomfortable un-garbed than in basic passing stuff.  I don't just mean that socially, either; if you make your garb right, it's so comfortable to wear that she won't want to go back to normal clothes at the end of the week.

Well at first she was dead set against wearing garb but after alot of coaxing and promising to buy commisioned stuff (I suck at sewing and i want what she brings to be comfortable for her) She found a few things she likes :) ty for the comments... One other question if I camp with say five people in a newer camp approx how much space is given? I am planing on making a tent period esque that could end up on the bigger side

All camps have similar guidelines on space: you get so much square-footage guaranteed depending upon pre-registration. If you *do* decide to camp on Merc's row, please pre-reg; the camp site has been getting more and more crowded every year, there's still room but essentially, you'll be given enough room for your tent to be set up. This year, like last year, when we show up I'll tell you where to go set your tent up; we're aiming for nice, orderly rows so we can fit a good few tents in but last year we had no trouble accommodating larger tents, and i don't predict any issues this year.

the others have you pretty much covered on everything else, hope to see you at Rag.

Mercs row is pretty big, I wouldn't be concerned if you prereg as Mercs row, it adds to their land which should put you in good shape. As far as garb is concerned, that has already been answered well here. She will be quite surprised at how comfortable garb really is. Especially if you buy it from a reputable vendor. I am biased towards BadAss Garb, but there are a few others out there able to do custom work at good prices. I spend allot of my mundane life in garb due to how comfortable it is (and I look damn sexy in it).

I'll tell Kevat to post her info here if you want to commission some stuff for her, I know Kevat is happy to bring her order to Rag and give it to here when she arrives (less packing for you).

Hi! BadAss Garb would be more than happy to work with your girlfriend to get her some garb that she likes, is comfortable in (even more comfortable than mundane clothes), and will look awesome on her!  Garb really does help complete the "Rag" experience.  If you'd like to, send me a private message here, or find me on Facebook (Kristy Trudeau, or BadAss Garb).  The BadAss Garb Facebook page has quite a few pictures of our past work.

I'd love to see some pictures of the styles she's thinking of. You won't find better quality garb on the market for more reasonable prices, and I can make everything from historically accurate to full fantasy.  I do make lots of deliveries at Rag, so I can have every ready for you when check in!

just to reiterate:

at Ragnarok, *unlike* other campouts, GARB IS REQUIRED.  all week.  for everyone.  i'm not a fighter and i even throw a skirt and tunic on for middle-of-the-night bathroom runs.

if you and your girlfriend come to your first Rag, be SURE TO PREREG with Merc Row, both of you.
if you come with a camp of five people, don't camp with Merc Row, make your own new camp.  when you get to Rag decide whether you want to camp in the Quiet Zone or not.
Note:  Merc Row is NOT in the Quiet Zone.

this thread has decent ladies garb for sale for cheap.  it'd be good if she wants to buy it or if she wants ideas when she commissions from one of the Dag garb companies:

Cooper's Lake has laundry facilities!!  minimum i recommend bringing to Rag is two sets of day garb, two sets of nightlife garb and maybe a set of lounging garb for in camp.  decide whether you want to wear something different each day or if you're willing to do laundry once or twice in the week.

this thread might help:

Need minimum garb? Have fifty or sixty bucks? Linkies!
http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php/topic,24036.msg524272.html#msg524272

when you commission garb, be sure to say whether you want natural or manmade fabrics [all-natural, cotton, linen, wool, silk have all the benefits of keeping you warm or cool that manmades have, but they breathe better i.e. they are more comfortable.]
say whether you want fantasy or historical designs
say whether you want garb plain or embellished with trim/embroidery/beading [embellishments are more expensive but make a world of difference in looking good]
if you have an idea "I want to be from X century/Persian/German/English/etc" make sure you say so.  especially if you're going non-European.

here are the links i know to the Dag garb companies.  i know more folks make garb for hire, but i don't know them.  if anyone else does, please post:

i just used the Search function and searched for "First Ragnarok"  here are the search results:

http://www.dagorhir.com/forums/index.php?action=search2

a lot of questions you may have have already been answered.

this will be our third year holding Rag at Cooper's Lake campground, so make sure you look at the date of a post that talks about site-specific information.  it might be talking about other campsites.

I could have sworn I read that Garb isn't required out of your camp. Obviously I'd encourage it be worn anyway but still.

You read wrong - it is required anywhere at the event except in your camp (and then only if your camp doesn't care about garb).  It is part of the atmosphere of the event, so don't ruin the medieval experience of others.

Shoot, I typed it wrong, I meant "except out of your camp".

Someone said that you have to wear it at all times including your camp previously.

no, no one dictates what you wear when you're inside your camp.  if you're going to have a nudist or semi-nudist camp you must have sheetwalls so people can't see that from outside.

but why would you pack mundane clothes to wear in camp?  that's extra clothes to pack and it means you have to change any time you're going to step outside.  it isn't practical.

it took a year or so of campouts, but i've even stopped bringing mundane PJs and wear garb to bed.

Make (or have made) a couple of undertunics out of light material so that you can wear them under your outer garb.  This will extend what you have to wear without harming your skin.  You can also rotate in clean mundane clothes that are fully hidden by your garb - like socks, underwear, etc.  Then club together with camp-mates to run loads of laundry every few days to keep you in clean stuff to wear next to your skin.

Thanatos, no problem!  in fact, this thread made me put up an FAQ yesterday, go check it out.  hopefully folks will be adding to it.

spend the next six months making garb, weapons, and practising and you'll have a great time at Rag.
keep an eye on threads about Nightlife and Rag U classes and your non-com girlfriend should have a good time, too.
almost 2,000 people go to Rag.  most of them don't post on boards here.  leaving camp and talking to them might be the best part.

no, no one dictates what you wear when you're inside your camp.  if you're going to have a nudist or semi-nudist camp you must have sheetwalls so people can't see that from outside.

have you ever spent an entire day in the summer outside and active?  clean clothes aren't clean anymore within half an hour.  if your skin is that sensitive, i'd think you'll have to change your underclothes twice a day or more.

Kyrax and Jari are spot on for you.  get a lightweight linen or if your budget is tight use cotton muslin which is $1-2 per yard and make a stack of undertunics that you can rotate.  get two or three nice looking tunics to wear over them and be prepared to do laundry twice or three times during Rag.

don't wanna do laundry?  bring more garb.

is garb required at Rag?  here is the answer from Tannhauser, the Event Organiser of Rag [aka a Big Cheese]:

Rag is still a garb-required event, right?

Garb is required on the battle field and is strongly encouraged when in public areas. How a player dresses while in a private camp is not regulated by these rules; however garb at all times is strongly encouraged. We reserves the right to make certain areas, functions, and gatherings garb required. So far, all of our formal 'Ragnarok events' are garb required, but we aren't policing people who may have just arrived or are leaving soon, so you may see some people not in garb in public areas.  Proper garb not only benefits the player, but enhances the experience of other players and improves the overall atmosphere of the event.

so if you just arrived or you just packed up you can walk around and say hi and goodbye.  but if you're in the middle of your stay and you're outside your camp, dress in garb.
if you want to go to any of the events in the Handbook like classes and parties, dress in garb.
if you want to fight on the Battlefield or in Tournaments, dress in garb.

short answer:  dress in garb.

...change your underclothes twice a day or more.

I do, and I'm always garbed. I bring so much underwear it is nearly shameful. Regular washings are essential for me, even if it's just a rag washing. I also hand wash and line dry my clothes. If you're sensitive, hand washing can leave some soap behind, so use something gentle like woolite.

Girls and their need for "hygiene" Pshaw is what I say. Pshaw!

All you need to do is jump in the lake with your clothes on every other day or so to wash off the puke stains and fight sweat. Trust me, that's all it really takes to be one step cleaner than 90% of people at events like this.

Jump in the shower then. I have hosed out a overly sweaty tunic in the showers and then hung it in the blazing ragnarok sun. Its not the most sanitary decision, but when its the last day of the event and you don't have anything else, it works. Just make sure you have deodorant when you pack for events. Nobody wants to smell your B.O. more than we have to.

After a week in "MY" level of basic garb, it takes me a day or so to get used mundane wear after Rag.  From a tunic to a skirt garb is not hard to make, and i'm just a cook with little sewing skill.

Lynn and I made it together is not hard.

Throw enough orcs in and everything else in the lake should die. Problem solved.

Hi Scheiny

The Food Cook-Off?  Hmm...

In light of last years turn out for cook-off I don't think I will host it again this year.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED AND JUDGED AND TO THE HALFA FOR ALLOWING US TO JOIN THEIR PARTY.

Scheiny, I will still supply grapes as in the past. :-)

This year I'm  planning on doing something for the security forces.  Scarlet and Thrush have unthanked (is that a word) workers?  I'm thinking of doing food for those who work security a certain number of shifts.

This topic is not for this thread...  Will Scarlet / Thrush I have posted this in the past what do you think?  I think we need to chat.

I have just picked up a 20 quart dutch oven  :-)...  So many possibilities...

get a bunch of dowel rods or planter hooks and string, tie the string to the dowel rods all the way around the perimeter of your camp.  [you're not allowed to collect deadfall for firewood at Cooper's, so i wouldn't try to use their sticks, either.]
you can hang strips of colored fabric from the string if you want to make your wall a bit more visible.

or you can make sheet walls.  you get basically bed sheets or curtains, sew a tunnel at the top and bottom and thread string through them.  but you need something stronger than dowel rods to hold that up.  they're nice because no one can look into your camp.
you can also make half [height] sheet walls that are about waist high.  they weigh less, there's less to pack, it's less expensive, it's less to launder.  but you don't get the privacy of tall sheet walls.

Hm. I'm thinking a new "T-tunic that looks like a tunic" tutorial might be in order. One that uses 45" wide yardage and has separate sleeve pieces instead of all one piece from a bedsheet.

How do people make camp boundaries and things like that?

Sheiny has some good ideas.  Lothlorien bought a bunch of real cheap Bamboo 4' stick and placed those around our perimeter and then ran a rope all the way around those.  We also put Tiki Torches at the entrance and at the four corners so people could easily see the boundary at night.

Feeding security sounds swell, we are always up for free food.

If I can make a request, please get your unit to sign up for some security shifts! Experience has shown that we don't get a lot of time to sit and enjoy a meal when we don't have enough people to help out.

Thanks for thinking about us.

I think they had 2 more.  They are brand new and will need to be seasoned.
But for $90.00 out the door, I will season it no problem.

We have a woods at our back, and marked the front of our camp with a row of tiki torches (about 4-5' apart). To save on fuel, I think we only lit half of them each night.

Nah, but thanks very much anyway Ketch. The one I'm going to get will suit my purposes for putting on a small feast for my unit, but I will have to upgrade later.
Maybe you and I could exchange some recipies sometime?
