Cancer:
How do you say 'f*** you' in Persian?
'Come! See my wares!'
Cyrus Al-Hazra:
the army was only close to 2million strong if you combine the three Persian empires. i will correct my statement by saying that in the heart of the empire in the capital city there where 10,000 troops ready, that is what Cyrus the Great decreed, when the empire fought against the Greeks where 300,000 men and 600 Calvary, when Alexander the great won against the first Persian empire they were fielding 300,000 men, 40,000 cavalry, 250 chariots, and 50 elephants. So I will correct my self with this but for the numbers of 2 million that is 100% off the mark. my information is from the Iranian Chamber society in Iran.

One source? Um, that might not be a great idea. As you've pointed out, the term "Persian Empire" means different things at different times. For example, when Herodotus was talking about Persia and its army, he was including the core empire and all of its subject states and allies. So you had ethnic Greek subjects of the empire fighting against Ethnic Greek city states and their allies. Like many an empire throughout history there could be many different nationalities that are encompassed under the banner of "Persia."
Odran:
The modern consensus is that the 2nd Persian invasion of Greece numbered about 200 - 250 thousand. This is based heavily on conjecture, estimates from modern historians range from less than 100,000 to Herodotus's estimate of 1.7 million. Also, it is important to bear in mind that the entire army of an empire is never at the same place an once. The Roman army was 330,000 in times of peace, probably 500,000 or more in the late Empire. The Persian army was probably a similar size, depending on how you count it.
Magnus:
Hey, Cyrus, I was being facetious. I study historiography, and may be a bit too eager to make oblique jokes about historians from antiquity. You clearly know more about ancient Persia than I do and I defer to your experience.
