Wrap Pants!

(1/5) > >>

Garkoth:
I'm planning on making some wrap pants soon. I bought some nice, dark brown, 100% cotton (3 yards for $10, felt like a good deal).

Here are a few questions I have:

Is cotton a good material to make wrap pants out of? For hot, humid weather? (I know a lot of Florida guys who wear them.)

Does it matter what I make my ties out of? Will certain ties cause my pants to fail as garb? I should have enough leftover cotton for ties if that's the best, easiest option. Although, I wouldn't mind having white or black ties, or leather ones if I could find a good way to get my hands on those.

Should I put ties at the bottom?

I think I should have more than enough for a second pair of wrap pants, should I make them the same length, or try a pair of just below knee-length pants as well?

Can you recommend any tutorials? These are the ones I've found:

Yes, cotton is a good material for your climate.  Any natural fabric is, but since you have cotton, use it.

It really doesn't matter what you use to make the ties.  What I usually end up doing is buying 2 packages of extra wide double fold bias tape and sewing that on the top edge of the pants.  But to me, that is the easiest and quickest thing to do, and I'm lazy. :P

You don't need to put ties on the bottom because you can just take the bottom corners and tie them together.

Wrap pants usually use about 2 yards of fabric, so I wouldn't try making a second pair until you get another yard of fabric.

The second link you have posted there is the best of the 4.

Garkoth:
Looking at all of these patterns, I'm becoming confused. How does one cut, a "U shape", turn into pants that have a "V shape"?

Should I try to find someone to explain this to me in person? It might be difficult to convey all this spatial business over the internets.

Silk:
Look carefully, the U shape is the crotch, not the sides.

Garkoth:
Right, but I'm not getting how that ends up working out. If I just cut out that U shape and 'try on' what I've got, I wouldn't know how to wear that, is the 'groin' of these pants supposed to be very low? If the U ends up splitting the two legs of the pants, it makes a lot more sense to me, but I'm still a little baffled because I don't see how just cutting that and sewing could lead to two different 'sides' of a pair of wrap pants.

I'm going to try to talk with a local who knows more about this and see if they can help me understand.
