Blue Hammer

(1/2) > >>

Eogar:
I'm making a blue hammer for my Dad (ya ya i know make a sword,I already have two and he really wants a hammer). It's going to be 32" my question is, what size would you make the face of the hammer? 6x6 or 8x8?

Gaul:
6X6 will look better and may actually hit better too, depending on how you pad it.  Also, my experience says that tip-heavy blues don't move very well if they are longer than the distance between your finger tips and the bony bit on top of your shoulder.

Anvildude:
I'm actually just finishing up a blue hammer/axe myself- you don't need to make it square, if you don't wish.  Something that would add some interest to it, and speed up the swings, is to have it a little thinner than it is tall (still at least 6", of course).

Ingvar the Ruthless:
My hammer is a rectangle, 2'' x 6''. I put two small strips 2'' wide by 6'' long of computer packing foam on the ends, and it hits like a dream.

this link has Arrakis's old blue hammer design. Scroll down 2 or 3 posts and you'll see it. In my experience, it hit fine without the open cell. When your hammer is done, the total length should from his wrist to his shoulder. I've found that in most cases, even a strong player, will be too slow if they use a hammer effectively, if the hammer's length goes beyond the wrist and shoulder.
