My new red sword (Olezka version)
« on: May 16, 2012, 09:39:48 pm »

I'm going to see if this passes at dead marches 2 this weekend. Going from glaive to red sword is hilarious. The fiberglass/graphite hockey stick core has zero flex. Blasty blast!!

Looks nice and padded. But remember, keep that face wherever the sword goes, otherwise.... it lose meaning....

Yeah it has a stabby. I used the same "green foam" that i used to repair my current glaive with but, this blade is considerably thinner. I worry that it will break down fast.

I built this for fun and chances are i won't use it that much. But it will be fun when I do! :)

The joke is that Barnabis posted his new red sword picture without a shirt on and people made a thing out of it.

Nice sword, but your house is a mess.  That tends to happen while foamsmithing.  It can happen to me too.

It looks cool, but I like the blades that are less wide. This looks more like a sword that nightmare would use in soul calibur lol. Its cool though, hockey sticks get uncomfortable in the grip though I find. You might wanna put some tennis wrap or something on it for comfort, unless you don't like comfort. lol

It has the tennis grip on there already. And I've been fighting with an 8 ft glaive for 4 years so I'm not a puss. The size of this blade isn't even noticeable when it comes to weight.

Haha I know what you mean. The hockey stick is literally a laughable weight. I really hope it doesn't hit way too hard. I have 5 layers of blade for safety and it was an easy way to add weight that didn't burden me in any way.

According to my math, camp pad is pretty close to 100 square inches to the ounce.  Counting glue and extra fabric, I'd still be surprised if the fifth layer added two ounces to the total weight.

Now what's this green foam you're talking about?

Its the retro green couch foam that people used to use for stab tips, arrows and javelins. I had it so I used it.

Same stuff from Jo-Ann's? If so, be prepared to replace it, especially with how hard you can hit.

Did you counter-weight this at all?

well instead of just saying you did the wrong thing, i'll give you a solution. go to walmart and buy a nerf foot ball. cut the football in half and cut off the tip. DAP some blue foam to the area that had the tip and DAP the other side to the sword. finally use cloth tape to secure the nerf football to the sword.

That wouldn't really be any better - I know guys who've done that, and the tip shears off really quickly. Especially in the hands of someone who fights like Olezka.

It needs yoga mat to be at its best. The green foam will work for a while.

i know Gorg uses yoga mat all the time, but i feel yoga mat by itself on a red hits too hard to be passing. i used about 3 layers of yoga mat on my red club and the 1st time i stabbed someone in the gut, i knocked the wind out of them

You stabbed them in the guts.  Of course it knocked the wind out of them.  That's how diaphragms work.

Yoga is fine for two handed weapons.  It prevents the stabs form leaving bruises.

Love the size of that thing, i have one similar,  but 8 foot long. I made a standard stabbing tip, a blue folded over 2 inches open cell, works great, gives the right amouth of "oh my insides" with no lingering effects.

its the best stabby out there, unless you can find a "Michigan state foam rubber bleacher pad" that stuff is amazing.

Good idea. You can find it at Wally World. It's a darker blue than camp pad, one side is flat, and the other side has small waves in it. It's a little pricey (~$20 if I remember right), but it lasts a long time.

Just wanted to pop in a say that I like the red and I hope it holds up. However, I've had a couple hockey stick reds before and either snapped them or had them hit way too hard with four layers. Obviously you have five, but still. Your mileage may vary, of course, but something to keep in mind.

I've been building my stabbing tips with 3/4'' stadium seat foam as opposed to the yoga mat using Arrakis' BA stabbing tip design.  I prefer the stadium seat to the yoga, to me it seems to hit just a little bit softer and doesn't stiffen up quite as much in the cold.  Its pretty much the same stuff though right?

Yes, it is exactly the same stuff (at least it should be) just in a different thickness, IIRC

In my experience, this is true.

I also prefer the stadium seat, because it comes in the right thickness without the need to layer. But it's marginally harder to locate, so I use 'yoga mat' as shorthand.

I don't know about ordering - Big Lots sometimes has them, and Dicks used to (don't know if they still do). Also google for Therm-a-seat tree stand seats (possibly available at your local hunting store).
