Sarcasm
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:15:57 am »
Since much (not all) sarcasm is more readily identified by tone and inflection of the spoken word, I was wondering if we could start an internet trend by picking some way of identifying sarcasm. A certain font, color, or other means might be helpful here and elsewhere.

I thought italics might be an easy way, but i put it to you folks. Cause your so smart and all.

Any Ideas?

Wait, I thought sarcasm was indicated by a purple font color. I've been misreading Silk for years!

In all seriousness, if the sarcastic exchange over the internet between two native English-speakers takes more than this...

Poster 1: I totally love it when people show up to weapons check with stuff they know won't pass!
Poster 2: What? Really? I don't think it's the weapons checker's responsibility to hold the hands of experienced fighters every step of the way.
Poster 1: Dude, that was sarcasm.
Poster 2: Ah, upon re-reading your post, I see that. I have clearly misunderstood your intent. My bad.
Poster 1: It's cool. Anyway, getting back to what we were talking about...

...then someone needs to revisit how one uses language to communicate. It's not the community's responsibility to hold the hands of adults every step of the way.

But alas, some of us have the abilities to seriously butthurt others with our sarcasm. Sometimes telling others that we're merely speaking in jest, is the only thing that keeps people out of the butthurt-hospital...

Fact: In speech, sarcasm is denoted by tone and related contextual clues.
Fact: In text, it becomes exponentially easier to detect sarcasm once you know what sort of contextual clues the writer is likely to include.
Fact: Any special system for denoting sarcasm on the boards will have a learning curve for new members, even if it's only the time before which they're made aware of it.

Therefore: Those people who least know the contextual clues left by board members here and are therefore most in need of the assistance of a system for denoting sarcasm (new people) are the least likely to know of it and be able to properly read/utilize it.  As their knowledge grows, their need shrinks.

Conclusion: Doomed idea is doomed.
