Nova3:
I want to go for the very fitted look that this picture shows

but I don't want buttons. Suggestions? I'm thinking some sort of back lacing, or side lacing, or some sort of laces.

Sváva The SpaceWolf:
I have a dress like that someone gave me. It has a zipper in the back and the buttons on the front are just for the look. Hope that helps a bit.

Ilsa Starling:
If you need a paper pattern, McCall's 4491 was decent, though it's shaped with princess seams instead of at the side seams like a proper fitted dress/cotehardie deal. It comes designed for back lacing, but it would be very easy to cut the front pattern piece on the fold, add some seam allowance, and switch it to front lacing.

Arrakis:
Back lacing.

Read everything in the links at the bottom; her experiments are awesome.

And Robin Netherton on the Gothic Fitted Dress, if you haven't seen it.
