You are mistaking a desire for historical plausibility for historical accuracy.

Because our game is set in a "Dark Ages meets Tolkien" fantasy world, there does exist the constraints of historical plausibility. The Middle Ages are pre-gunpowder. Pre-renaissance. Most of the swords-and-sorcery lore that we take our mental imagery from comes from this time, when the common folk believed in the existence and danger of dragons and faeries, when women wore flowing gowns and the men were cloaked and chainmailled warriors. Clothing was made by hand, and dyed with the materials available.
So yes, fantasy does allow much leeway in the concept of accuracy. But in order to keep the fantasy believable, and not just a drugged-out hallucination or what have you, plausibility should be at the forefront of the imagination. Anyone can dream up craziness. It takes real creativity to fit that fantastic idea into the constraints of the world you wish to insert it into.

Actually Kyrax the tank top is not lazy in any way and it was/is the perfect top for a mermaid character.  Especially when put with the other garb it was with.

I don't sew.  Whether my husband sews it or Kmart sews it, it is still sewed by someone other than me.  So if you consider that lazy, so be it.  I suck at sewing.  I know my strengths and I know my weakness.  I can't sew myself out of a paperbag and that is not going to change.

When you are a mermaid, you are supposed to look like a mermaid.  The top was/is indeed perfect for such a character.  It was/is the perfect top for said "costume".

As to whether you think it fits your garb standards is a different story.  But keep your insults to yourself.

Case in point for plausibility: how is a mermaid able to fight? In what situation would a mermaid find herself wielding a weapon against armored men on a hot field under the blazing sun? What distinguishes you as a fighting mermaid out of water, save your clothing choice? How is any of that plausible to begin with? You can choose to be anything that you want, but why gripe about people not liking your choice when it doesn't fit in the game?

It might be "perfect" for a Halloween mermaid costume, if you lash on some shells or what have you, but it doesn't meet Dagorhir's garb requirements.  I'm not trying to be hard on you or your now abandoned choice of costume, or to be insulting, I'm just pointing out that it clearly doesn't work for Dagorhir.  Feel free to re-read the newish garb sections of the MoA if you think this is just my opinion.

I don't sew much either, and don't care to if I can avoid it.  Same goes for a lot of people - and yet those folks buy or barter for garb and meet that minimum.

About the collers of T-shirts and UnderArmor showing by half an inch or more,  I think I came up with a solution.  Now I realize me solution can easily cause more problems, but I hope it does not.  I realize some people might laugh (and I hope someone does).  And it may give someone more talented an idea they can use and that would be a good thing.  And there is a very small chance it will work as intended and both sides will be happy but I really doubt it but if I don't try then nothing will change and it might not anyway.

I think this is new, so legal stuff: I claim all rights to this and freely grant all and any liscenses to any and all who want one.  Feel free to make a profit if you can but no trying to copyright anything stemming from this.  I am not responsible for any harm that comes to anyone from makeing, attemting to make, useing, or haveing used upon you this item in any form it may ever be made in.  If someone already made one and has a liscence, I don't think you can sue me because I made it for personal use so  phhhbbttt.  If not my team of lawers can beat up yours.

I have pictures but not enough for a full tutorial.  If you want to copy and need help read Alric's thread on how to make a tunic and follow the advice Stell and Ilsa gave me.  Don't blame them if this makes you unhappy, I went out on a limb on my own.

The first pic I am makeing two neckline faceings in different colors.
The second I pin them both together with safety pins and make sure they fit over my head.
The third I sew the center circle together and snip the material down to the seam and then fold up the outside and hem that down too, but not to each other, the only attachment is in the center hole.
The fourth, I turned it inside out and pressed it to make it flat

So far I only know how to put 4 pictures up per post so I will try to get the next one in and finish showing what I came up with.

In this post the first picture I have the green tucked under my T-shirt coller and the purple showing.  I picked purple so Silk would like it.
Second I have the purple in and green showing.  Figured it would be better with contrasting colors, it worked for Stell when she was showing how to do stuff.
The third is where I see a potential problem.  I buy my T-shirts from the fat guy store and pick the extra long option.  I do pick to have a pocket, but they sell them without for less.  Now if I tuck up my sleeves they look puffy and the shirt is just crotch length.  Please don't try this, as you can see it don't really look that great.  It would be better if I used double sided tape to hold down the edges of the neck faceing.  The whole idea was just to cover a coller that stuck out just a little.  I wanted it to be removeable so people could still wear their T-shirt other places.
The final picture is to be funny and is the worst part about sewing.

Here are two of the hats that i wear on the field, depending on how hot it is:

The first is my tricorn hat that is made from a wool blank that can be purchased from Jas townsend. I added the trim and molded it myself.

Next is my half cocked hat that i've had since my earlier days reenacting. I use it when the sun is horrendous and it kept me from turning into one giant blister at Rag. It is also made of wool. I am the one bending over to pick up arrows in the black and white with the barrel on my back

I saw Rap say that straw hats are going to be banned next year?

If this is true, then might i recommend reading the article i post below and reconsider for it is clear that they are indeed period.

But if this issue has already been resolved, then i apologize for kicking a dead horse topic.

The only hats that are outright failing, so far, are cadet caps, Gilligan/bucket/fishing/old dude hats, blatantly cowboy hats, and baseball caps.

Right now my team and I are hashing out when does a generic brimmed hat turn into a cowboy hat.

Materials used aren't really a concern to me.

Here's a blurb about hats that I wrote up for an event last year. I was being fairly lax with the "sort of OK" list, just because of a worse than usual summer in Texas. Normally, bucket hats, cloches, and boaters would be on the bad list.

Quote
2. Hats - Some hats are good, some are bad, and some fall in the middle.

2.a. Good hats - archer caps, Phrygian caps, arming caps, slouch hats with domed or cylindrical crowns, swing/sun hats, coolie hats, domed straw hats, lansknecht hats, Tudor caps, snoods, wimples, Jorvik/Coppergate caps, chaperones, mantled hoods, elf caps, muffin hats, berets/tams, mitres, skull caps, watch caps, jester caps, and any other historical type of hat or cap.

2.b. Bad hats - cowboy hats, bowlers, fedoras, stovepipes, tophats, pork pies, baseball caps, officer caps, bicornes, tricornes, coonskins, deerstalkers, hard hats, forage caps, Gatsbys/newsboys, driving caps, Trilbys, pith helmets, etc.

2.c. Sort of OK hats - Broad-brimmed panamas or Cubans, slouch hats with pinched or creased crowns, bucket hats, boaters, cloches, gaucho hats, and other hats that don't clash terribly with medieval clothing or scream "MODERN" to the semi-educated person's eye.

The only complaint I had is one I heard about from my realm, which I was asked to bring up here. Apparently someone had pockets on their garb pants and they were asked to put duct tape over them, which makes no sense to me. Pockets shouldn't make garb fail, and putting duct tape on them to solve the problem sounds strange at best, considering that it would make the garb look worse if anything.

Like I said, just what someone reported to me, but it was something that was brought up.

Cargo pants stand out pretty bad, but apart from those, pockets are fine. Not sure who told them to put duct tape on it, none of my people were targeting pockets.

No...it was an endorsement of your ingenuity and a reminder to all of us that we have to put effort into looking good on the field. Plus it is actually one of my favorite quotes from a movie made before most of Dagorhir was born!

I saw a couple people on the field wearing unaltered and unadorned karate gis (big manufacturer's logo patches on the front and all) as the sum total of their garb.  Not a widespread thing, but definitely one I'd like to see nipped in the bud.

And I love that you took a problem and ran with it for a solution that's actually feasible. I was thinking people could add a quick bit of trim to their mundane collars so what shows is trim not logos. But I like your idea better.

Reasoning for failing the hat?

Modern design (cowboy), pinched crown, Western leatherwork braid around the base of the brim.

If I saw that hat on a regular person, I would instantly think cowboy hat.

In the spirit of trolling I've been trying to find a brimmed pre-modern cap for several hours now. The oldest one I found is an 18th or 19th century shako, so I can pretty comfortably say that 'cadet caps' have no basis in history. Seems to go back to the Kepi style cap, which is the successor to the shako.

Eitherway, back to trolling!

Dr. Livingstoneiapopolopis, I presume?

Apparently Herakles wearing a pith helmet.

There are lots of medieval hats out there you could wear, if you wanted to

So I will troll by leaving this post here.

Alric seems to me to be very calm in spite of any nonsence going on these board.  Even if he did use stern words I think he would say them calmly and politely.

And then we would get scolded privately, because we are also his friends and he can do that.
