When you say "tunic" are you specifically referring to actual tunics? Or are you more using it as a term for generic medieval shirt? Because the Bulgar never really wore proper tunics, but we did have our own version of potato-sacks shirts, much to the lovely (and usually quite fashionable) Raya's dismay.

You really do epitomize the guy who contributes not a damned thing, but has something ****ty to say about everything.

Also, I'm almost singlehandedly responsible for the rise in garb and garb standards in my realm. ****, I MAKE most of it.

But as always you operate under the assumption that if you don't see it, it never happened, all the while barely venturing out of upstate NY.

Just ideas,
a cross your heart set of straps holding something to the back
slits instead of gores (or gussets?)
belt to hold the fabric closer
embroidery
could be made of silk, but I don't know if that would improve the look
faceings for the neck and cuffs and a strip of the same color sewn to the bottom hem
It will probally improve the look if the models hair is down
ribbons, rings, jewlery

It would. Always. Good luck getting me to fit like a tunic though. I'd go for more mundane materials. Silk is not easy to work with, and very expensive.

How cute. I got a warning. Must be nice to have someone on the payroll. The payroll, in this case, being the moderator team.

Way to go, Jerry!

It was me, there was no prompting or discussion with the other mods (although I'm sure they'll agree with my action), and you got that warning because you went way over the line! I like you, Siguric, but you need to simmer down. One more crack like the last one, and I'll ban you.

Let's get back to talking about feminine style tunics.

So stating the truth is going way over the line. Good to know where the line is drawn, if nothing else. I guess I'll stick to gross generalizations, misleading half-truths and blatant lies from here on out!

I like you, Siguric.

Aww. You hold a special place in my heart too, Whisper.

Let's get back to talking about feminine style tunics.

They're all feminine. The look like dresses!

I shall see if I can whip something out for this challenge as well :) I have more garb to be making myself anyway. I'll see if I can't make something universal that can cover several garb needs with various different accessorizing.

I'm planning on having someone in my realm sew me up a simple knee length tunic and then making a variety of character concepts off of that.

Gonna put some make-up on it and tell it that it can never satisfy anyone with a hem that small.

oh, wait wrong kind of feminization...

I'm thinking about how hard it will be for me to do this since my lady is all curves so pretty much a belt turns a tunic into a tunic, daaaaang

I thought a tunic had to have that sort of key-hole shaped head opening, though I admit I know very little about medieval clothing.

To Wikipedia!

Okay then, I'm stumped, what the heck is the difference between a shirt and a tunic?

Note: I hope my ignorance isn't hijacking the thread, if it is just let me know and I shall bow out without any ill will.

A tunic is a type of shirt. Generally worn longer, belted, and either flared or vented at the sides to give hip room.

For Medieval, Central/Western European dress, a "shirt" is an upper-body undergarment, equivalent to an undershirt, while a "tunic" is an outer garment, also known as a "cote," and similar to a collared, button-front shirt. Over the "cote" you would wear a "surcote" or a "cotehardie" or a "gown," which would be the equivalent of a blazer, sportcoat, or suit jacket.

If you're a man, that is, I don't know from lady clothes.

Just don't assume this explanation holds for the actual form of the garment.

Will the fitted tunic I'm making count (I'm making it ala my thread based on the sweet links people posted)? At the core it's not complicated, but it really kind of is. Just lemme know how strictly you want to stick to the "simple" and for beginners idea you want to be :) because I have other garb I can/want to make!

Would something like the methods shown on this site be acceptable?

http://www.cottesimple.com/index.html

Technically, it's still kinda "simple", not relying on fancy patterns and such... I dunno if it is technically beginner level though :/

Basically, I've spent all day reading through the essay and explanation she wrote, and I *really* want to try it now. But I totally understand if it doesn't fit this contest :)

(For those too lazy to read, she explains the process of fitting a gown by fitting it on the person who is going to wear it. Therefore, creating the perfect shape for your body.)

((edited because I totally forgot to actually paste the link...))

Going to the store for fabric either today or tomorrow...BUT here's an on-topic link to a Tumblr called "Women Fighters in Reasonable Armor". I think that from these examples, we can certainly say that mostly-full- or full-coverage garb can be sexy, feminine, and awesome.

Figured this thread would be interested in some girl-power inspiration  :)  Anyway, back to the tunics!

Split hosen, in Europe, from well before 1200 to ~1450, give or take a handful of decades, depending on where you were, when they migrated to joined hosen.

Some places, earlier: Nothing or tightly-fitted trousers or long braies.  In the Middle East, Africa, the Far East, the Americas, etc.?  A bunch of other stuff.

Wrap pants....gonna smack you.... :P

And to translate Arrakis's jargon - split hosen are skinny pantlegs, sometimes with socklike feet (picture footed jammie pantlegs), tied to a band fastened around the waist. No crotch seam, so yes the undies (braies) showed if they were worn. Joined hosen just means that these jammie legs got sewn together at the crotch eventually, sometimes with some seriously bizarre piecing jobs to make room for the bottom and bits.
Some of them did indeed look like trousers.

I'm planning on having someone in my realm sew me up a simple knee length tunic and then making a variety of character concepts off of that.

Use Sirilay, I would love to see that adorable little elf model :D
