Cheap and Easy Camp Lighting! Cormac's Camp Candles
Stellaria:
Yes, I'm spamming the daylights out of these. This is an easy-to-make, inexpensive lighting option for camps, devised by Cormac of Gwynnedd. He's been using them for a couple years at least, and I finally got a chance to play around with one when he brought it to a Maester's Conclave at Rag.
You all should make some.
They're made from a cheapie glass globe vase from the dollar store, some copper wire (I think 14g) and a wick. Cormac uses string from a string-mop head, I used a strip of t-shirt fabric.
You thread the wick into the wick assembly...
...and then rest the assembly on the lip of the glass globe
Pour some vegetable oil in, being sure to saturate the wick completely. Cormac says that canola oil burns cleanest and brightest in his experience.
Then pour water in, being sure to avoid getting any on the wick, until the level of the oil reaches the bottom of the wick assembly.
Light. It takes a bit for the wick to catch, but it's worth the wait. Cormac says that this amount of oil will burn all evening, so it is a very economical light option.
Tervel:
How did you hang them?
Stellaria:
I haven't yet, but I plan to make a wire collar that fits under the lip of the bowl, with 3 loops twisted into it for attaching chains. Add an S-hook and you're good to go.
Tater the wine maker, sword unit of K'lar:
what is the estimated price per light?
Grey Wolfcaller, Grand High Homo of Dagorhir:
All depends on how many you make. You can buy the globes per-light you want to make, so there's at least a dollar in there, but the oil and the wire are going to be bought in much larger quantities.
